Can I access previous versions of an autosaved draft?

Hello, somehow my whole blog post in draft mode was backspaced, and then i hit the back button, and lost my ability to Undo changes. I see tutorials on restoring revisions, but I don’t have that functionality on my page. Please help.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi @pineapplei,
In case you accidentally pressed back button, you can press the forward button.
The page will prompt you with the following alert:

    Saved Draft
A more recent revision of this page exists. Restore?
    Restore | Don’t Restore

On hitting Restore the page loads all the changes done before pressing the back button.

    Hope that helps.

    Hi there,

Is this the page you seeing about restoring revisions? https://en.support.wordpress.com/editors/page-post-revisions/

Are you saying you don’t see the History button when you go to the draft page? I just tried a test with a draft page and after a few tests, the History link showed up and I could see past revisions, but only one, and it contained all of the revisions I made in the previous couple of minutes.

Let us know if you’re still having issues with your page.

No, this is a draft that was never published. And I did not see an option to restore after going forward. I haven’t solved the original problem, but I did just rewrite my entire post.

Sorry it seems you’ve lost your original draft.

I know some people like to write drafts in a word processor or something else on their computer where they can have auto and manual save, so it’s not subject to the whims of the browser, etc. I do that sometimes, other times I take my chances. :)

    Best of luck going forward!

For the record, there is certainly a bug with the caption button from an image. I repeated this multiple times. I copied and pasted an image into WordPress and clicked “caption” from the pop-up menu, and it erased everything in my draft except for the picture, and also enoargened the picture but caption button was not responsive, and the undo button was disabled. Very very strange..

That is curious and unexpected behavior. Unfortunately it’s so difficult to troubleshoot such things between browser versions and plugins and operating systems, etc. If you want to work with WordPress.com Staff to troubleshoot the problem, you can add “modlook” to the tag box on the right side and someone will come by to help you.

In testing your steps, I tried copying & pasting an image in on Mac with Firefox and it doesn’t paste the image. I was able to drag & drop the image and it showed up as expected. In fact, the WordPress interface changed and highlighted the Featured Image space in orange and the post composing space in blue, asking which area I wanted to place the image. I chose the the post space and it uploaded just fine.

Just to help on a non WordPress.com way, you can install browser addons like Lazarus which have the ‘save as you type’ functionality.
Accidentally going back or sometimes crashing of browser, all these scenario’s are taken care off… :)

Actually the issue was I didn’t want it to save. Going back removed my ability to Undo/ctrl+Z a full accidental deletion. It saved the page with nothing on it and wouldn’t take me back to the old version.. :/ I think the problems here are: the bug that deleted my text in the first place, and not having a history of revisions in Draft/Never published mode. After I hit publish it had all of the features that were mentioned like “would you like to revert to your older version” after going back and forward, and the revision History button.
