Can I add a sidebar to the Home front page of the Visual theme?

    I have changed to the Visual theme for my new blog “IrelandGolfTour2015”. I like this theme. I like the visual emphasis and the multiple columns on the blog’s front page. The Visual theme uses 3 columns without a sidebar of widgets. The sidebar only appears on the individual displays for posts and pages.

    If I pay the $30 for customizing the blog will I be able to change the front page from 3 columns to 2 columns and make the sidebar appear in place of the 3rd column?

    Or, is there another customization option that would allow a sidebar to appear on the home page with the blog posts?

    Or, is there an alternative similar theme that offers 2 columns and a sidebar on the blog’s front page?

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Mike. The Visual theme either allows for the 3-column post display on your front page, or a static page (sans posts) that can include a sidebar. It’s an either/or situation. The Custom Design upgrade will not allow you to make that extensive of a design change.

    The themes Flounder, Massive Press, and Ideation and Intent allow for three columns on the front page. There are others as well. Take a look at:

    Before you make a choice, check out the theme’s Demo. It may also have sample site links at the bottom of the page that you can view.

    Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks much and happy blogging!

    I’ve switched to the Sunspot theme which has left and right sidebars and two columns of posts in the middle. Some customization of colours and I think it looks pretty good. The customization option I purchased does not allow everything in the theme to have its colour and font changed. The main title and the menu items, for example. I’m guessing I could alter them with CSS overrides. I’ll have to see if I figure out how to do that. What do you recommend for a beginner in CSS, such as identifying the item to override and the syntax for overriding colours and fonts?

    Nice choice. I like the layout you’ve chosen!

    The main header can be changed without CSS. Click Appearance → Header. Scroll to the bottom of the page and you’ll see where you can select a new color. Then save your changes.

    As I look at your site, everything appears color coordinated now. Did you manage to set all the colors already? Let me know if you need assistance with those menu items. Thanks!

    Thanks Robyn! I was able to change the Header text colour to the correct hex for Ireland orange. But I could not reduce the size of the font for the header text. So for now, at least, I embedded the name of the site right into the header image, replaced the image, and then turned off the header text.

    Yes, the colours of the fonts have been coordinated. All the links are Ireland green and Ireland orange is also used. However, the customization of the colours does not control the colour of the main paragraph text used in posts and pages, and footer text “Posted In” and “Tagged” and the text that appears in the widgets. All of that text is a tan or light brown colour. I would like to brighten that text to a shade of white. Will that require some CSS overrides, or is that text colour fixed in this Sunspot theme?

    Thanks again,
    Mike

    Hey Mike! You sure can use CSS to adjust the body text color.

    Please click Appearance → Customize in your Dashboard and paste the following into your CSS editor:

    body {
    color:#FFFFFF;
    }

    Let me know how that works out. Thanks!
