Can I Add AdSense Code with WPCode or Ad Inserter on the Personal Plan?

I learned that starting from September 8, 2025, WordPress has changed to allow plugin installation on both the Personal and Premium plans. If I newly subscribe to the Personal plan, is it possible to install plugins like WPCode or Ad Inserter to add AdSense code and display AdSense ads? Or do I need to choose the Business plan in order to run AdSense ads?

    Hi @skyblueguy,

I’m just a community volunteer (not WordPress.com staff), but here’s some clarification:

    • Normally, installing custom plugins (like WPCode or Ad Inserter) has only been available on the Business plan or higher: Install a Plugin.
    • Recently WordPress.com announced a limited-time offer (starting Sept 8, 2025) where newly created sites or new plan purchases on the Personal or Premium plan can also unlock plugin access. You can read about that here: Plugin Access on Personal and Premium Plans.
    • Whether this applies to your site depends on when and how you subscribed. If your site qualifies under this promotion, you should be able to install plugins on the Personal plan. If not, plugin uploads (and therefore tools like Ad Inserter) still require the Business plan.

    For AdSense specifically:

    • You’ll need the ability to insert code or use a plugin, which means either this new promotion needs to apply to your site or you’ll need to be on the Business plan.
    • WordPress.com also offers its own built-in ad network, WordAds, available starting with the Premium plan.

So: If your site qualifies for the new plugin offer, Personal plan might work. Otherwise, you’ll need the Business plan to run AdSense.

Hi there @skyblueguy can you share where you saw that? 🙏

Hi. I contacted WordPress.com and received a response stating that, starting from September 8, 2025, WordPress has changed to allow plugin installation on both the Personal and Premium plans. However, I am not sure whether this change is permanent or only temporary.

I asked WordPress.com again, and they said that the change is permanent.

    Thanks for sharing that. 🙏

So technically speaking, you could run those plugins on either of those plans if you are upgrading from a free WordPress.com site or starting a new WordPress.com site.

my2¢/If you can, spring for the Premium plan. There are some nice features, but what you want is the extra storage space since plugins count against your storage. Or start with Personal and then upgrade to Premium when you need more storage. (After that, it’s only upgrading to the Business plan or the horribly expensive extra storage add on.)

Also, Just FYI from previous forum threads, ad income is very low unless your site gets thousands of views each month. For WordAds, WordPress.com changed ad partners in the last few months and the rate per click dropped even lower. Just something to think about. /my2¢

If you have other questions, feel free to post back here. Cheers
