Can I add users that are not on WordPress

  I am teaching a Digital Photography class and want all of my students to be able to post images and comment on images. Does each student need to set up their own wordpress blog in order to be an Author or contributor?

  The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  No, they do not need a blog, but they do need a user ID. They can register that at http://wordpress.com without selecting the “give me a blog” option.
