Can I backdate posts to show up as less recent?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m brand new to WordPress and want to know if I can post a number of blogs from other sites dating as far back as 2002, and have them show up in chronological order (i.e., in an archive) rather than appearing in the order in which they are posted to WordPress. Is this possible, and how would it be accomplished? Many thanks for any help.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Just to make sure, is this the blog you are asking about
    http://bullseyedan.wordpress.com/

Are you trying to import posts from other blogs you have done in the past? If so, which blogging platforms?
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/import/

Or are you trying to copy and paste only a few posts?
As in back-dating, or editing the post time/date?

    (1) Are the articles your own creations?
    (2) If not, thendo you have written permission from the copyright holder to post them?
    (3) if these articles are currently posted posted them a second time will be creating duplicate content and can give rise to penalties. http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=66359

Setting those issues aside “yes” we can change date/time stamps. I will post a link and at first glance you mat think that’s not what I need. Look a second time because it’s the illustration I want you to see and a picture is worth a thousand words. Immediately under the “Visibility” you will see the time date stamp. On the immediate left of it is the “Edit” link. Click and change the date there.

If you have imported the contents into your blog please check here > Settings>Writing, tick the option “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically”, click Save Changes.

1tess and timethief – the blog is bullseyedan and all the articles are my own creation.
I’d like to import all the posts from my Blogger account (15-20) plus about 35 more posted as separate pages on a personal website as a journal.

It sounds as though I can import all the posts from Blogger, repost those from my website, and change the time date stamps to when the articles were actually written, and they will then sort in that order in the Archive. Is that correct?

    Thanks again.

You can export the posts out of your blogspot blog and import them into your new wordpress.com blog. http://en.support.wordpress.com/import/

After the import is complete you may find that your posts look “messed up”. Remain calm and note what I said here as it is important https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/can-i-backdate-posts-to-show-up-as-less-recent?replies=7#post-426412
If they do look “messed up” starting with your latest post, open it in the editor, make one minor change such as adding a space and then deleting it, and then click “Update Post.” Check your blog and see if it is back to normal. If not, open the next post and do the same thing until it goes back to normal. It usually only takes doing one or two to rectify them all.

Once that is complete, you can edit the posts and change the date/timestamps as we discussed above. Immediately after you edit and publish each post it will be automatically added to the Archives and Categories.

Thanks for the help…I couldn’t import the Blogger content directly (some problem with Google which I couldn’t resolve) but I was able to copy and paste them individually, which worked fine. No comments, but there were very few anyway. Changing the date was a piece of cake. Again…thanks a lot!

    Re: Comments
On a wordpress.com blog you can do something you cannot so on a blogspot blog. If you sign out of your wordpress.com blog you can enter all the comments yourself. Then where required you can then edit and change the the information in those comment so it’s correct in terms of the original comment.
