Can I cancel a domain and buy it again using Blue Host?

    Hi,

    I wanted to use WordPress.com at first but then I decided WordPress.org was the one I wanted to use. However, I got a custom domain name from wordpress.com which I paid for.

    If I cancel the domain name, would I be able to buy it back through Bluehost? And how long will it take before the name becomes available again?

    Hi,

    I have a similar question. I have rented my domain name on wordpress.com for one year but now I want to build my website using wix.

    After transfer my domain name to wix, what happen after the domain name expires one year later? How do I renew it and keep the domain name?

    @ielts886 I am not sure what you mean by “having rented the domain name on WordPress.com.” If you purchased the domain name through WordPress.com/WildWestDomains and now want to use it on a Wix site, you can certainly do so by changing the name servers to the ones that Wix gives you. More about that here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/move-domain/#change-name-servers-to-point-the-domain-outside-of-wordpress-com If you keep your domain registration with WordPress.com, you will need to pay the annual fee to renew it and keep it online (as you would need to do with any domain registrar).

    I suggest that you read that Support doc in order to see what your choices are overall.

    Transfer domain registration to another registrar

    To transfer a domain from one registrar to another, you need to generate an authorization and send it to the new registrar. With this unique code, the old registrar will allow the new registrar to take over the domain registration.

    And I assume the renew of my domain will be with Wix one year later ?

    Yes, you would transfer the domain registration to the new domain registrar following that process. Whether Wix accepts incoming domain transfers is something you need to check with them.

    However, DO NOT let your custom domain name expire in order to set it up someplace else, even if it means renewing it at WildWestDomains before transferring it. Letting an active domain expire leads to all kinds of trouble, including the possibility of someone else buying it.

    If you transfer the domain registration from one registrar to a new registrar, then you follow up with the renewal of that domain with the new registrar. I cannot say if it will be exactly one year later, there could be some overlap, but DO NOT let your active domain expire. (Am I clear enough on that point? :) )

    Just so you know, ICANN rules state that you may not transfer your domain name to a new registrar within the first 60 days after initial registration, or the first 60 days after a transfer. I’m not sure whether this is your case, but wanted to make you aware of it.
