can I change a free blog without needing to go Premium

I set up a free WordPress blog for a group of people to research the WWI service personnel in our area. Now I’m wanting to change it slightly so we can make it available to the public.

I want to remove authors’ names from individual blog posts.
I want to add an index of all blog post titles (ie the names of the servicemen) onto the static home front page.

Can I do these changes onto a free template or does it need to be Premium for these? I’ve seen reference to Archives.php and index.php etc and I just don’t know where they are or whether they apply to this free template.

We will get no commercial benefit from the site. We just wish to make the research we’ve done available to the general public – hopefully without having to reenter data/ blog posts.

I haven’t found on my WP admin where I would enter any of the changes mentioned so I wondered if they only work if I pay for my WordPress?

    Thank you for any help

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I should have said that the blog as it stands is a private blog. I’m wanting to make the above changes before turning it public.

To remove the Post author you would need to do one of two things – get the CSS upgrade (now part of the $99.-/yr Premimum thing and no longer available as stand alone CSS for $30.-/yr) of find a theme that does not show Author names (should be one but sorry I don’t have a clue which is which)

Pay no attention to the whatever *.php – you can’t code here – but an index page of names should be able to be done with no problem and no extra cost

I still can’t get an index of blog titles (ideally I’d like it on my front static page).

I’ve tried many free themes & haven’t yet found one that does not show author’s name. I thought Gateway had solved it for me, but no. Author still shows when I select the detailed post.

We are a volunteer group & cannot pay annual fees but hoped to be able to post our research online via a public WordPress blog.

This is the Archives Short Code – that should help you get an archive page – some custom options are allowed

I will flag this for the staff – maybe they know if there is a theme that does not show multiple authors – I don’t do themes

    Thanks. I appreciate your help.

  • @kerryf, you can also use this shortcode on your front page:

    [display-posts]

@supernovia – they also want to turn off or use a theme that does not show individual Authors on a site that has multiple Authors.

Any way to do that without the CSS upgrade (now requiring the full Premium thing @ $99) ??

Seems to me that most themes show the authors as soon as a second Author is added,

That’s right. So they can change all of the authors to one single author (bulk editing posts).

Several themes won’t show the author on the list of posts. I can’t think of any that will hide the author on individual posts, though, not without hiding the information in CSS. I think the author name could still show up elsewhere too, like in the reader.

@kerryf would you be willing to change the author on these posts so that they’re all by the same author? We’d be happy to help you do that if you’ll let us know which author you’d need to use.

Thanks all – yes that would solve it for me. We’ll change all the authors to one name & then individual researchers won’t be identified.

I’ll ask again if I can’t work out how to do the bulk editing of names.

The [display-posts] works nicely thanks, but seems to display 10 index titles. Is that right or does it vary?

Is there any easy way to get them to appear in alphabetical order?

  • I’m glad that works :) About index titles: I’m not quite sure what you mean there. It should show a list of the latest posts, and you can adjust the settings as you’d like. We have more details here:

Let us know if you have more questions on that. Cheers!
