Hey stcarescloset,
Domain names can be a little confusing at times. I’ve included a link below from the WordPress.com support forum that should clarify this for you, i’ve quoted below the part i think you will find most useful.
Adding a domain to your site (either registering a new domain or mapping one you already own) requires a WordPress.com plan. Each plan comes with one free domain credit. However, you can setup additional domains on the same site as add-on upgrades.
Registering additional domains through WordPress.com starts at $18.00 per domain, per year (see below for a list of all the domains we currently offer).
Domain owners are required to share their contact information. The $8.00 Private Registration upgrade will protect your identity and hide your contact information.
Adding additional domains you already own costs $13.00 per domain, per year. Here is a little guide about domain names below:
I hope this answers everything. pop a reply in here if i can help you further.
cheers.

Thank you, this information was helpful, but I don’t want to have two domains in the end. I want to change the one domain I own to a different name. In essence, I would like to cancel the one I have, and get a new one. Can I do that?
-
The domain name you already own will have a time limit on it (usually a year), Then it will expire. You can not change the domain name you already own.
Instead you can Purchase a new domain name, map your WordPress.com site with the new domain name, then remove the current domain so it no longer maps to your website.
All you do then is wait for the old domain name to expire.
Let me know if you anymore help.

Hi there,
As @lucasjoyce said, you can’t change your current domain. To use a different domain, you’ll need to register a new domain. Then you can either cancel the current one, or keep both domains on your account until stclarescustomlinens.com expires in July.
If you decide to cancel, please keep in mind that except for a few days directly afterwards we can’t undo that. Once the domain is cancelled it also won’t be released immediately, and you might not be able to register it again somewhere else should you later want it back.
Please first register the new domain, and then reply here to confirm if you want to cancel the old one, or if you just want to switch off autorenew and let it expire.
-
Thank you, this has been helpful. We are going to set up the new domain on Friday. I would like to turn off the auto renew on stclarescustomlinens.com. Is there any financial benefit to canceling it early? If not, I will let it expire in July.
-
I’ve disabled autorenew for you. We don’t give pro-rated refunds on domains, so financially there’s no difference between cancelling it now or letting it expire.
Once you’ve added the new domain, go to My Site ->Domains and change the primary domain at the top of that screen to the new domain. That will cause the new domain to be the one visitors to your site see, but the old one will also still take traffic to your site.

We want to route the http://www.stclarescustomlinens.com url to the new website http://www.stclarescloset.com. Can you help me with this?
-
stclarescloset.com belongs to a completely different username, catholicconnnectcincinnati, and is connected to a different site, stclarescloset.wordpress.com
Changing the primary domain as I explained before is only possible if you buy the domain for the same site.
To redirect traffic from the old site to the new site you will need to buy the Site Redirect upgrade using this account.
If you want both domains connected to the same site, let me know and I can move stclarescustomlinens.com to stclarescloset.wordpress.com instead. Then both domains will go to that site, but traffic from your old site, stclarescustomlinens.wordpress.com, won’t be redirected. That still requires the site redirect upgrade.
-
Thank you very much. I think I understand it better now. Can we redirect stclarescustomlinens.com to stclarescloset.wordpress.com?
-
To do a redirect, add the site redirect upgrade to your site via this link:
https://wordpress.com/domains/add/site-redirect/
Buy the upgrade using this account.
-
Okay, thank you. I am still deciding whether or not I want to do the redirect. If I make the upgrade, I will let you know.

@jessicachaipaul
In future, please start your own thread rather than posting into other users’ threads.
Custom domains are registered for a year at a time. Once registered, a domain cannot be edited, only cancelled, and if you cancel more than 48 hours after registration it’s non-refundable.
So the only way to change your domain is to register a new domain, and then either cancel the existing one or let it expire.
Note that you won’t need to buy a completely new plan. You can buy just a domain on top of the plan you already have. .com domains are $18 without private registration and $26 with.
Also note that your G Suite subscription is tied to your domain. Should you cancel your existing domain, your email address @ that domain will immediately stop working, and your G Suite subscription will be useless. You’ll need to buy a new G Suite subscription to set up email on the new domain.
