Can I change the looks in the output of code tag?

    I am a new blogger on wordpress.com platform. I’ve used wordpress on other sites but its my first experience to on wordpress.com
    I haven’t upgraded to premium and don’t want to upgrade for now. I am posting some tutorials on my blog, which include several lines of codes.
    The code tag gives the output in the theme but not so prominent. I know I can add custom styles in CSS but after upgrading.

    I just wanna ask if there is any way that I can change the background and color of text in code tags, when they appear in the output.
    For now, it don’t have any background and just the fonts are different in code tag’s output.
    But I want it to look completely prominent from other text in my posts.

    Is there any way to do this without upgrading?
