Can I change the site name?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

I wonder if someone can answer this:

I’m a technical writing student and I’m creating a website for a company as a project. When I began the site I named it:

    companynametestsite1.com

But I’d like to eventually transfer it to the company in their own domain as this:

    companyname.com

    Is this possible?

    Thank you.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from, and the domain name you desire must be available for purchase, or you must already own the domain URL.

You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard at > Store > My Upgrades to purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog.

See here if you do not own a domain http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

See here for mapping an existing domain that you already own http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

After you do the primary blog set up it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

    Hi,

So the way I understand it, once my site is complete, mapping it to another domain will allow me to “change the name” from:

    companynametestsite.com

    to:

    companyname.com

as long as companyname.com is registered by my client? (It is.)

I already provided instructions that are as clear as I can possibly make them above. Perhaps this will help.

WordPress.com provides free blogs and free hosting for them. WordPress.com does not accept domain name transfers but mapping to an existing domain can be done.

Domain mapping of an existing domain URL that you already own and purchased elsewhere is not done free of charge. You will have to renew the domain name purchase where you made it and the domain mapping purchase here every year.

    Important Notes Before Upgrading http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgrading

Mapping an existing domain costs $13. annually. In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from. If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog.

See here for mapping an existing domain that you already own http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades is where you do the primary blog set up knowing it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

    Hi,

Thanks for your help, and I don’t mean to be obtuse.

I get what you’re saying about mapping to an existing domain, the fees, making sure email is re-directed, etc.

You have to keep in mind that not everybody has specialized knowledge, and may not completely understand the terminology, so we have to make sure we understand what we’re doing.

I’m just trying to make certain that I can remove the words “testsite” from the site name when I map it to an existing domain. The site name will be the same as the domain I map it to. In fact it might have been simpler to just tell me that what I’m calling the “site name” is the same as the domain name.

I appreciate your help, but try not to get snarky. It may seem simple and clear to you, but I can guarantee it isn’t simple and clear to lots and lots of intelligent people. If it was, you wouldn’t need to answer any questions at all.

But I honestly do thank you for your help.

The Site title (blog name) and/or the optional Tagline can be changed on the top of this page at any time. > Settings > General …
“save changes”. That is exactly where search engine spiders look for the site title and removing it from there can cause issues with getting your content indexed. Note that the site title (blog name) and blog address URL do not have to be the same but it’s better for SEO (search engine optimization) if they are the same.

If you want to change the .wordpress.com blog address ie. the URL starting with http:// then you must be logged in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog to do that and the URL you desire must be available. If so then you can change the URL by using this guide
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/
    http://en.support.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/dashboard-e1371648470893.png

Changing a URL is a permanent and irreversible act. No changed or deleted blog URLs are recycled here, regardless of who registered and deleted them and no exceptions are made.

Domain mapping options have already been posted above.

But I’d like to eventually transfer it to the company in their own domain as this:

Every .wordpress.com blog has a sole owner and it is the person with the username account who registered the blog under that username account and associated email address, and purchased any upgrades for it.

You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchased upgrades to renew them or transfer the blogs and the upgrades to another .wordpress.com username account.

To transfer a blog from one username account A to another username account B you must first log in under the username account A that owns the blog you want to transfer to the other username account.

Then you add the other username account B as an Admin of the blog.
    adding users http://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/
    user roles http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/

Then you A can use this process to transfer the blog to that username account B instead http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#transferring-your-blog-to-another-user-or-account
