Can I create a relative URL from my-website.co.uk to point to legacy.my-website.co.uk ?

I am trying to use relative URL’s in my test website for my village so that when I transfer it to the village URL I don’t have to change the URL’s.

I am having trouble creating a relative URL to link to a copy of the old website which I have put in a subdomain legacy.my-website.co.uk

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hey there,

Happy to help you with this.

Generally speaking this is possible, and this would be known as a sub-domain, or a CNAME record.

The CNAME record would point to where the new is being hosted.

It sounds like you’re looking to create a new site under the main domain, and keep the old site under the legacy domain, is that correct?

If yes, we can perhaps suggest a way to build a new site, under a different domain entirely, and when the time is right the domain can be connected to the newly built site. This would ensure the live site is not disturbed.

Are you able to provide more information of what you’re looking to achieve? We can certainly point you in the right direction.

    Looking forward to hearing more!

    Hi,

I have created a new test village website with a test domain name new-village.co.uk and created a sub-domain with a snapshot of the existing website, as some people don’t want to lose the old website data.

I will eventually be using the existing URL for our-village.co.uk with the subdomain legacy.our-village.co.uk,.

All the URLs in the menu structure of my new website are relative and I would like a menu option to point the legacy website but not sure how to point to legacy.our-village.co.uk as a relative URL, something like ../legacy.$Home or ../legacy.root ????

  • Hi there,

Apologies, but we can’t help with your issue directly because we don’t host our-village.co.uk on our WordPress.com managed hosting.

To explain, we are a fully managed hosting provider and use a custom server environment that is optimized for WordPress, provides built-in security and performance improvements, as well as in-house support for your site questions. You can learn more about the performance and security benefits of our managed hosting here: https://wordpress.com/hosting/

Because of the way we’ve optimized our service, we also use a customized version of WordPress that is different (under the hood) from what you use at Ionos. Specifically we use a custom for managing domain addresses on WordPress.com-hosted sites, and because of this our procedures for changing your site address and redirecting traffic do not work on sites hosted with other providers.

You definitely have the option to move your site to us so we can provide in-house help, and we offer a migration plugin that will help you move your site to our managed hosting in just a few clicks.

Unfortunately though, as it stands now, we are not able to help since it is hosted elsewhere.

The good news is that your hosting provider may be able to help in this instance since they would typically advise you on changing the site address of sites hosted on theri servers. I recommend contacting Ionos for further assistance since they are in the best position to help. Thanks!

    Hi,

I was only using our-village.co.uk as an example URL. I currently have my test website hosted with BlueHost.

I am just after some technical help but maybe I have not explained myself very well.

In the menu structure of my website I have used “/cycling” to point to the cycling page rather than the ful absolute URL, this means I don’t have to update the URL’s when I move from my test URL to the live URL.

I was wondering if there was any way to create a relative URL to a subdomain ?

Maybe “No|” is the answer to my question and I will just have to use an absolute URL for this 1 menu option ?????

Even so, the situation remains the same. As your site is not hosted here on WordPress.com, we cannot assist you with this. You will need to talk to your host’s support team. You might also post your question over in the WordPress.org forum:
