can I create a slide show in the side bar and if so, how? I have the free versio

  I don’t see a widget for creating a slide show from my media images

  You can use the Gallery widget and set it to the “Slideshow” style. More details about the widget and the various settings associated with it can be found at http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/gallery-widget/
