Can I customize CSS on a retired theme?

I’ve had my blog forever so the theme I had installed is apparently a super old theme that has since been retired. However, I really REALLY love my current theme, and I just need to make some adjustments to it… I tried previewing some of the currently live themes and I can’t make them look like how I want them to be using the built-in customizing options.

I saw online that I would need to use CSS on it but the ‘add CSS’ is only limited to Premium. My blog is a free blog, not a premium site. So… I’m not sure what to do. I’m afraid if I kill my old theme and isntall a new one, I would not be able to recreate it and that would make me really sad.

You don’t have access to the CSS files on the Free Plan. Also it’s not a good idea to stick to a very old and retired theme.
You can choose from almost 100 themes at https://wordpress.com/themes/free, you’ll surely find a theme you can use.
Also your old theme is not responsive meaning people can’t view your site on a smartphone. Every new theme is responsive which increases the people who can see your site.
