Can I do this with CSS?

I thought it would be fun to play around with CSS, and I was also hoping to make a few specific changes to the blog layout and navigation, but I’m not sure if the changes I’d like to make fall under the CSS upgrade. Here were the changes I was considering:

    (1) Create a two-level hierarchy of posts. More substantial posts would appear like regular blog posts, and then a second class of posts which would be much shorter; quick commentary on a linked article, for instance. These two types of posts should be visibly distinguishable, with different formatting, indentation, and maybe an accompanying graphic to identify which type of post it is.

    (2) Have separate comments and trackback sections following each post, and labeled as such, instead of mixing them all up in one section and in chronological order.

    (3) Make tweaks to the list of posts that appear within a given category, i.e. listing only post titles — or by title and the first few sentences — rather than reprinting several whole posts in that list.

    (4) If the blog is set to show the X most recent posts on the front page, and if, upon clicking a category, the blog shows the Y most recent posts filed in that category, can X and Y set to be different numbers? e.g. show 3 posts on the front page, but listing the 10 most recent posts from each category.

It looks like the CSS upgrade lets us redo or modify style sheets, but not any underlying HTML. Is it possible to do those things above just through the CSS upgrade? Thank you very much for your assistance.

I’m no CSS guru by a long shot, but it looks to me like #3 is the only one that the CSS upgrade would do. For the rest, you’d really have to have an independent WordPress install in your own webspace.

I think what you are talking about in item #1 are what are known as asides. Look here but it apparently only works with Sandbox.

As for the rest, I’m no CSS guru, either.

Actually, I just found out that Sandbox also handles item # 2. Look here.

Vivian, thanks so much for your reply! In your first post, where is the “here” link pointing to? There doesn’t seem to be a URL to go to.

Thanks raincoaster for mentioning #3. That seemed the most likely to me too.

hopefully this is the right place for my question: my blog uses the ‘quentin’ theme- Gorgeous. if i pay for the CSS upgrade ( and I know NOTHING about CSS- will get a friend to handle it)- will i be able to do the following:

    – INCREASE the font size where you click to make/see comments (not the comments/posts themselves)

    – make the field where you read the posts wider

    – make comments show up automatically when someone clicks on a particular page/post

thanks in advance- these are the OnlY changes i am interested in making!

    warmly,

    Aphioni

    – No
    – Yes
    – they do already. Click on the title of any page/post and see for yourself

Raincoaster, why do you think the answer to the first is no? I should have thought you could change this with CSS.

Oh, and Aphioni, why not ask your friend to try it out first using the free Preview feature so that you can be sure of getting what you want before you pay the money?

  • Unknown's avatar

Ah, I misunderstood. I thought they were asking for it to magnify all the comments just when you hovered on the Click to Read Comments button. Of course you can increase the size of the text on the link itself. You’re right.

i definitely will get y friend to do it for free first. i just need to bribr her with a bottle of white wine then lock the office door behind her… thank you so much folks!

i am using Quentin now and love it so so much- but ALL I WANT TO DO is widen the width of the area where the posts go! My CSS friend came over and we widened EVERYTHING- including my a$$- sitting here for hours trying to find the right place in CSS to widen the posts. pages- we widened no problem. posts- PROBLEM.

PLEASE tell me how to do it- I will use Quentin the rest of my LIFE if you just share that information with me… i’m begging. begging. i have my credit card out and ready to pay for it if i can get what i want!

    Please,

    Aphioni
