Hi shelovesgraphics,
Please go to Tools → Export in your WordPress.com dashboard to download an XML file of your blog’s content. http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/
During the import process (if you are importing into either another wordpress.COM site, or a wordpress.ORG site), you are given the opportunity to have your attachments (images) imported at the same time.
You could download the WordPress.ORG software then Export / Import your site and that should put the pictures referenced in the Posts and Pages onto your desktop. That way, you will be able to download all the images back to your computer.
Ask over at: http://wordpress.org/support/ for help and guidance on the install.

@shelovesgraphics unfortunately there is currently no utility on WPcom that will do what you want and it is a popular request.
Even exporting and then importing to a different WP install won’t download the Media files to your computer. It’s simply a case of opening each image and saving it directly.

@jen – IF the WordPress install is on your PC (local host) the images will show up on your PC (if you config things correctly) – but that is installing the WordPress.ORG software on your PC – easier today than when I did it several years ago – but I don’t think it is a “one button” install yet

I don’t know @Jen – the utility to download the media library is as you note a very common probably daily request – and with computers being changed often and blogs living many years – it only makes sense to me to have that ability – I doubt that it would be too difficult for a good developer / programmer to add
