    Are you talking about trying to customise the theme and test it out before making a purchase? There are no trial upgrades of any sorts made available here at WordPress.com. It is important to know that most themes here are responsive themes.

    However you can purchase a Premium theme from the WordPress.com Theme Showcase with an existing free plan and test the premium theme of choice on purchase. There is a 30 day refund window if you feel the selected theme wasn’t suitable for your needs. If you buy a premium template, it’s yours for as long as the site exists (provided the theme isn’t retired because it’s become too old to maintain).     If you activate a premium theme as part of the Premium or Business plan, the theme will only remain active as long as you renew the plan each year.
