Can I fix the images I import to a set size?

This isn’t for my site its for a site I’m doing for my client:
    https://mygoodmeasure.wordpress.com/

I’d like the client to update it all himself and make things easier by setting the image size he uploads to appear at the set size of 568 X 379 px.

I’ve tried altering it in Settings/Media so that my large size is set to 568 X 379 px but that doesn’t appear to have made a difference..

When I place my image as a large size (as per the media settings), it comes in at 584 X 416 px (its meant to be 535 X 379px according to the dimensions given on the image panel)

When I place my image as full size image it comes in at 650 X 461 px (the image’s original dimensions are 3353 X 2376 px)

Is it because I have altered the Large size in the Media settings that the size is then importing in at funny sizes?

What would be really good to know, is if I can set the landscape size, can I set the portrait size too? In the past I think programmers I have worked with have done this by fixing a height size for both. But not sure that’s possible on here…

Anyone help? I’ve got the size my image is importing in by taking screengrabs btw.

    Thanks, Laura

No. It doesn’t make sense that the maximum large size at media settings would have any effect on the size of an image inserted at medium size. The height should be no more than the 379 pixels maximum that you have set.

I can’t explain why an image set to display at 379 pixels would display at 416 px. My guess is that you accidentally chose large or full size in this instance.

No I was very careful about importing the images!

Can you confirm that by setting the large size in media settings to my own custom size, that that custom size should then appear as an option when I come to importing my image? From what I can see, my custome size wasn’t there at all..

No. That’s not how it works. The settings at Media Settings are the maximum sizes for the three basic size types thumbnail, medium, and large. The reason why is that file images come in a vast array of width to height ratios and the precise maximums are seldom going to both be applied at the same time. Some examples, using your medium size setting of 568 X 379 pixels:

    1. Upload a square, 400 X 400 image — The large size option will be 379 X 379.

    2. Upload a 600 X 400 image — The large size option in my test was 535 X 357. I don’t know how that size is calculated. Why not 568 X 379? Would it be too close to the full size?

    3. Upload a 500 X 400 image — The large size option comes up as 474 X 379.

    4. Upload an image of 568 X 400 — The full size option is 535 X 377. Again I don’t know how that is calculated.

From what I can see, my custome size wasn’t there at all..

That’s unlikely to happen. It will happen if your file image is exactly 568 X 379, or 1136 X 758, and possibly with other combinations between those with the same ratio of width to height.

The result of the 600 X 400 surprised me, because its width to height ratio of 1.5: 1 applied to your maximum of 379 height would give a width of 568.5. So I expected the large size to be 568 X 379 or 569 X 379.
