can I get a domain name for my wordpress.com FREE site? or only premium?

  I’m seeing conflicting information about this out there, so I just need to know for sure: can I get my own domain name and connect it to my FREE wordpress.com site or is that only possible with the upgrade to Premium wordpress.com? Can someone point me to where the official, current answer is?

  You will need the Domain Mapping upgrade to connect a domain registered elsewhere to your WordPress.com site. While it is included in WordPress.com Premium, it is also available as a standalone upgrade for $13/yr

  Thanks, rootjosh. That’s mapping, I’m interested in purchasing a new domain from WP. I found this, which says you can do it for $18 (“Every site comes with a free/default address with .wordpress.com in the URL. You can hide the .wordpress.com part by registering a new domain”):

  … BUT … when I’m in my account and click on “upgrades” then “compare plans”, a chart comes up that does not show a custom domain for free plans, it makes it look like you can’t get one. Here’s a screenshot: http://tinyurl.com/wordpressplanoptions

  This is why I’m confused! Which one is correct? I need to know for several important reasons. Please help.

  My apologies. “can I get my own domain name” seemed to indicate that you were getting it elsewhere.

  I’m interested in purchasing a new domain from WP.

  To register a domain, simply head to https://wordpress.com/domains/ , click “register a new domain name”, and enter the domain you wish to use in the box.Then just follow the instructions that appear to register your domain.

  Let me know if you have any trouble.
