  • Good Morning – Yes. If you purchase a domain elsewhere, you will be able to use it here at WordPress.com by completing Domain Mapping.
Each year you would need to renew your domain through the registrar and also the Domain Mapping through WordPress.com.

You can register custom domains at WordPress.com too. If you register the domain here, you will only need to renew the domain annually and not the domain mapping. Register your custom domain here: http://wordpress.com/start/domains/ Custom domains are those that eliminate the .wordpress portion of the address and simply end with .com , .org , etc…

Buying your domain elsewhere and mapping it to WordPress.com will not allow you to use plugins on your WordPress.com site. Plugins are a feature only supported on self hosted, WordPress.org sites. Upgrading your plan on WordPress.com will not gain access to plugins either.

WordPress.com and WordPress.org are very different. Those differences are outlined here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

FYI: According to staff, domain mapping is no longer available for $13. It’s only available as part of the Premium plan: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/domain-mapping-1118?replies=10#post-2643450
