Can I get rid of double word spacing?
-
So the problem is, every time i try to post poetry, it comes out double line spaced, regardless of how I format it in-editor. Even using shift-enter to break the lines doesn’t work, it always, always, always comes out in double spacing. I don’t have this problem with prose. It means poetry is a nightmare to read.
Help?

If you want to learn how to format and space your posts and pages in a wordpress.COM blog see: http://en.support.wordpress.com/advanced-html/
If you use the classic editor here Dashboard > Posts > Add New to create your posts what I provide below may be helpful.
In the classic editor, if you are working in the Visual editor, to get single spacing between paragraphs hold the SHIFT key down and simultaneously click ENTER at the end of the paragraph. If you are working in the Text or HTML editor, a single click of ENTER will give you a single-spaced line, and two clicks of ENTER will result in double spaced lines.
Whether or not you are copying and pasting go to > Dashboard > Settings > Writing and enable this setting:
Formatting
__ WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically
“save changes”IMPORTANT NOTE: When you create a new post, always make sure the Format tool is set to Paragraph before you start typing. It’s in the Visual editor Row 2 first position “style”. See the illustration here http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#row-2 If you forget to do that then edit the post, highlight all in the Visual editor, select Paragraph from the Format tool, switch editor to Text then switch back to Visual and click Update.

I have the same problem with quoting song lyrics as this page of my blog shows:
http://3songsbonn.com/2015/12/06/leaving-is-the-theme-arriving-is-the-challenge/#more-10918Back-spacing moves the lines back to single space again but as soon as I save that it breaks the lines up wrong.

As I said, I have already done this, and it does not get rid of the double spacing. For example, this post – http://littleliterature.net/2015/10/04/everyone/ – when viewed in the editor appears like this:
Love is synonymous with pain
Crumpling in on yourself as if receding
Can protect you from the black hole inside,
Kneeling before it for envelopment begging.Pain that was never immaterial,
Fear banishing rest invites inward
Paranoia to tear from you words
Unglorified should ever remain unuttered.etc
I went through each line, backspaced, then shift-entered. It did nothing. The double spacing is still there. I’m already in paragraph, and I’ve tried doing my editing and writing in the html editor – it still comes out as double spaced.

Thanks for the tip Timethief. Shift and enter works so that the text goes down only one line and not two. Why does it automatically go down two lines though in the first place? If I wanted two I would press return twice!

Why does it automatically go down two lines though in the first place?
That’s the way the theme is designed to display and it’s common.

Does everyone else but me find that shift and enter works? It still comes out as double spaced when I publish the post for me.
All I can think of left to try is fiddling some more with the CSS.

You did not say that you had a CSS upgrade. Post here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization#postform

Hi @jarosullivan, have you thought about using “pre” tags instead of a blockquote? It would look like this:
<pre> Your Poetry Here </pre> -

this post, for example http://littleliterature.net/2015/12/08/this-is-not-love/
it looks like this:
words words words words
