Can I have a Google+ widget in my sidebar like I have a Facebook and Twitter link?

  • There is no Google= widget on WordPress.com at this time. But you can create a badge that you can add to a text widget by using this link:

    https://developers.google.com/+/web/badge/

Hello, I could not make it work. I moved a text widget in the sidebar, named it ‘Google+’ and pasted the 4 lines into the window underneath. When I press ‘save’ the ‘code’ disappears. On my blog only the word Googe+ appeared.
    What did I do wrong?

  • Can you paste the code here so I can take a look at it? It is possible that Google has changed something thus making it unusable on WordPress.com.

Just press the “code” formatting button in the reply box, paste the code in, and press the “code” button again.

    This is the code:

<!– Place this tag in your head or just before your close body tag. –>
    <script src=”https://apis.google.com/js/platform.js” async defer></script>

<!– Place this tag where you want the widget to render. –>
    <div class=”g-page” data-href=”//plus.google.com/u/0/102632660690299370900″ data-rel=”publisher”></div>

I do not know what “Place this tag etc’ means.

  • Switch to the “icon” setting rather than the “badge” setting and try that code.

Forum member justjennifer wrote a nice step-by-step here.

    1. in order to get the code from the Google Developer’s page, be logged in to Google with the account that you want to create the widget with. That means for Pages, you need to be logged in with that account. Alternately, you can add the URL of the G+ Page by selecting “Other” in the drop down menu where your G+ profile name appears.

    2. Select the “Icon” option, not the Badge option.

    3. If you wish, you can add text like “See our Page on” or “Follow me on” in the Custom Name field.

    4. Copy all the resulting code from the box under the icon to your clipboard.

    5. Go back to your site’s Widget Dashboard on WordPress.com and add a Text Widget to your site’s sidebar.

    6. Paste the code you copied from G+ Developers page into the Text Widget and save it.

    Sorry, I do not understand.

I have pasted a Google+ image and linked it to my Google+ page.

It is not very elegant but it works. I hope to get a proper ikon one day.

  • Did you try switching the icon/badge setting?

Here’s a screenshot of what I am talking about:
