Can I have an abandoned URL?
-
I’d like to have a WordPress URL but it’s already taken – apparently it was created back in 2009, with no posts or other activity, and remains abandoned. I’d love to move my blog to that URL; is some way we could do this? It seems a shame that someone can squat on a WordPress domain and squander it.

Unused blogs belong to those who register them and there is no rule that they must be used. If the comments are orpen of there is a contact form you can contact the blog owner and request they transfer the blog to your username account. Otherwise, you can’t use it. http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#transferring-your-blog-to-another-user-or-account
Be aware that you can purchase your own domain name via a domain mapping upgrade and then it will not matter what the underlying .wordpress.com sub-domain URL is. See > http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/

Thanks for that timely and complete answer. As there’s no contact info it looks like I’m probably out of luck.

You’re welcome. That’s often the case but perhaps you can register a blog with a similar name. http://en.support.wordpress.com/register-a-blog/
