Can I have sponsors on my blog?

I wanted to know if I could have sponsors linked on my sidebar with their links to their website.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi! Very good question. :)

As WordPress.com’s Advertising page will tell you, many affiliate links and sponsored posts are allowed on your blog, with the exception of “image ads or third-party advertising networks like Google AdSense, OpenX, Lijit, BuySellAds, and Vibrant Media”.

Here is more information on sponsors and affiliate links –

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/affiliate-links/

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/sponsored-posts/

Based on these articles, I think you having links to the websites of sponsors will not be a problem at all. :)

The short answer is No. I disagree with lastnode and I’ve been here eight years.

Hmmm. From what I see in the affiliate links support article though, if you are creating original content (and not just linking to products), then text (non-image) links to sponsors/affiliates are fine?

Please correct me if I’m wrong. Just checking! :)

    Hi,

You can have sponsored posts on your blog provided it meets the requirements here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/sponsored-posts/

The sidebar is a bit tricky though. We do not allow images to be linked to sponsored/affiliate links within your sidebar. We consider that an image or display ad. You can put sponsored links in your sidebar provided they do not become the main focus of your site.

A handful of sponsored links would be fine. A list of 30 links that extends all the way down your sidebar is a bit overboard.

I’m with raincoaster on this. This is my understanding.

    1. WordPress.com allows bloggers to insert text affiliate links within post and page content to most third-party affiliate programs, provided they are not the primary content of the site in question.

    2. Image affiliate links in posts and pages and any banners, affiliate links in sidebar or footer widget areas, are still considered to be advertising and are not allowed on WordPress.com blogs.

Will you please either confirm or correct my understanding stated above, because it is the same one that every regular Volunteer answering questions here has at this point in time?

    Hi @timethief,

WordPress.com allows bloggers to insert text affiliate links within post and page content to most third-party affiliate programs, provided they are not the primary content of the site in question.

    Correct.

Image affiliate links in posts and pages and any banners, affiliate links in sidebar or footer widget areas, are still considered to be advertising and are not allowed on WordPress.com blogs.

Image affiliate links and banners are not allowed in sidebar or footer widget areas as they’re considered banner ads.

Sponsored text links in the sidebar are considered on a case-by-case basis. We’re trying to avoid having blogs that list 40 different sponsored links down the sidebar with the sole intent of luring readers to click on the links. That setup is certainly not allowed.

However, if a blogger puts a handful of sponsored text links in their sidebar that fit with the content of their site, that’s fine. For example, a photography blog might not use words in their posts. In that case, they might want to put a link for where they buy their gear in the sidebar. That’s totally fine. The links should fit in naturally with the content, not be the entire focus.

Right, and Volunteers do not make judgment calls, nor do we have the time when multitasking as I do, to icky picky over whether or not the spônsored links are legit, are reflected in the content, or there are too many of them. :)

So, when we regular Volunteers see sponsored links appearing in sidebars, we will continue to use the report blog link on the Admin when we visit the blogs in question, and let the Terms of Service Staff make the call.

    Thanks for your response.

I’m out. The goalposts aren’t just shifting, they’re prancing. And they’re monetized. I won’t be handling those threads anymore, period.
