Can I hide my own comments in the Recent Comments widget on my sidebar?

I would like to hide my own comments in the Recent Comments widget on my sidebar: if I respond to folks’ comments (which often is the courteous and even desirable thing to do), then it looks like I’m doing most of the comments on my own posts. I tried adding the rule to “hide” when I was the author, but then the entire widget failed to appear on my sidebar. Am I doing something wrong, or is it impossible to hide my own comments without hiding everyone else’s?
I have found myself not commenting a time or two because I don’t want ALL the comments to be from me.
