Can I import a premium theme into WordPress.com that isn't included in the list?

    Hi there

We’re looking to change to a premium theme and wondered if it’s possible to import a premium WordPress theme from one of the many different companies selling themes, eg Envato, ? We’re struggling to find a suitable theme for our non-profit, and the ones within WordPress.com don’t really suit. If we want to use a theme, say, from Envato, does this mean we have to move to wordpress.org?

    Thanks

    Hey there @tomorrowswarriors!

Unfortunately, the answer is no, you cannot add a third party theme to your WordPress.com site.

    From the Themes support doc:

Uploading a third-party or custom theme is possible only on self-hosted sites using the WordPress.org software. This means that you cannot upload any themes to your WordPress.com site.

Oh that’s a pity. OK, thanks very much for your speedy response.

    @tomorrowswarriors,

No problem! It was a pleasure to be of assistance. ;)

May I ask what kind of theme were you looking for that you were unable to find at https://wordpress.com/themes ?

  • As designsimply mentioned, we’d love to know which theme or type of theme you were looking for – it will help us bring more relevant themes to WordPress.com in the future.

Maisha is specifically geared to nonprofits – maybe have a look and see what you think?

That answered my first question. I am disappointed because I want to use Swell, but bought it from Theme Trust before I saw it come up on the WordPress site. I could have bought what I wanted right here!

My second question is whether I am better off with a third-party host installing WordPress versus whatever benefits Premium offers.

Have you explained to Theme Trust that you accidentally purchased the self-hosted version but would like the WordPress.com version instead? This is a common source of confusion and theme developers are often happy to refund these accidental purchases – so it’s worth asking them if you haven’t already.

It really depends on your needs, time, and skills. We have a comparison of self-hosted vs. WordPress.com here:

    Hi again

I’ve looked at Maisha. It’s nice but I particularly need to be able to add a big DONATE button in the top right corner. I don’t think it’s customizable enough for this, or is it?

  • Unknown's avatar

Oh, the other thing is that the DONATE button needs to be present on all pages.

  • You could style the right-most menu item with custom CSS to make it stand out, and link it to a PayPal payment form:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/paypal/

You’d add the menu item as a custom link within your menu as the last menu item, and it would appear on every page.
