Can I import WordPress site contents before I transfer domain?
-
I plan to transfer self hosted WordPress site to wordpress.com. Can I import site content so I can test I have transferred everything properly before I map my domain across, so as to minimize disruption for users of my site? If so, I’d appreciate advice on how to achieve this? Thanks.

Hi there, yes, you can. In fact, that’s even the recommended approach! You can see all the steps in the suggested order here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/
Let us know if you have any further questions or issues. :)

Actually, I already tried creating a free site and importing the xml file exported from the self-hosted site (www.systass.org) following the steps outlined in the page you gave, but the result was a bit of a mess, plenty of content but little structure and the menu completely gone. Thought it likely a Theme issue and since the self-hosted site uses Twenty-ten (not available of wordpress.com), tried using Twenty-sixteen which was described as similar on wordpress.com. There was a slight improvement but only slight. We had hoped to move to the Business plan but need to sure that our website will survive the move to wordpress.com before moving the domain over.

Is it possible to import a self-hosted site that uses Twenty-Ten Theme into wordpress.com?

Yes, you can also use the Twenty Ten theme on WordPress.com, however the Twenty Ten theme is retired. That means you can still use it if you wish, but it isn’t recommended do so.

Thanks. When I imported into free site I created in wordpress by using XML export from my self hosted site, I got content – but all the menus were gone. In case it helps site I’m trying to move can be seen at http://systass.org/. I guess theme does not come across in the export/import sequence? Do I have to install twenty-ten theme? If so, how do I do that as twenty-ten was not available to be selected when I tried to set theme in my wordpress test site. I presume twenty-ten was not available because it is retired? Thanks for any help you can give to get this transfer completed successfully.

If you want to use the Twenty Ten theme on this account that is only 4 months old I think you’ll be out of luck. Retired themes are only available for accounts that were created before a theme was retired. That theme may become increasingly obsolete as time goes on anyway. Is it responsive to different screen sizes? I would have thought Twenty Sixteen a better fit. An xml file only contains content so whatever theme you choose will need menus etc tweaking.
PS: Actually, if you purchased the Business plan, as you say you may be doing, you’d be able to install the WordPress.org version of the Twenty Ten theme here at WordPress.com. -
Thanks very much themagicrobot. We’ll go ahead then and set up the business plan, import our site and once we have it working port the domain across. Thanks again.
