I would like to import my LiveJournal entries to my WordPress blog by way of importing LIveJournal XML files.
Is that possible to do with a free site?
Thanks, in advance, for your help.

Hi there!
Sure thing, you do not need to upgrade your plan to import your content. Here’s more info on how to get your LiveJournal posts to WordPress.com:
https://wordpress.com/support/import/#import-from-another-platform.
-
Thanks for the help.
But that doesn’t quite help me because this is what I see when I look at my dashboard for importing LiveJournal entries:
‘LiveJournal Run Importer Import posts from LiveJournal using their API.’
And when I tried to run the importer this way, it got stuck.
-
Our LiveJournal importer asks for your LiveJournal username and password and we import your files securely through their API.
It does take some time to import and you need to stay on that page to ensure the import is running properly. It might seem “stuck”, but it’s actually running in the background.
Also, I’m not showing where you initiated the import to begin with. Does your LiveJournal account still exist? If you deleted it on their end, that might explain the problem here.
Could you try starting that again and let us know how that goes? You might want to try a different browser than the one you’re currently using if you still have trouble.
-
I had done it with a previous WordPress account. But I wasn’t able to do any more after a certain time because it wouldn’t work from LiveJournal’s end.
I tried with a couple more WordPress accounts. And then the import got stuck.
So then I decided to delete all of these WordPress accounts. Then try again with the current one that I have.
Oh and I tried to import all of these above mentioned entries using Firefox.
But I also have both Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge on the computer. And so I will try the import with one of those broswers.
Lastly, yes, I still have the LiveJournal account. I’ve had it since 2003, in fact.
-
I’m going to try the import first using Google Chrome.
If that doesn’t work, then I will try it using Microsoft Edge.
-
Thanks, let us know how it goes. If you have posts dating back to 2003, it might take awhile.

-
Could you please let me know what progress (if any) has been made with my import?
If so, then thanks in advance.

We have no other insight into the status of your import than you would have on your own dashboard:
https://madaboutplaid73.wordpress.com/wp-admin/admin.php?import=livejournal
You will need to stay on that page while the import is running. Since it’s currently “paused” right now, click the “Continue previous import” button and monitor the status there.
Again, it’s going to take a long time and it may seem like it’s timing out, but it’s not. You can always refresh the page and continue the previous import, but it’s best if you just let it run, preferably overnight.
Additionally you don’t need to keep tagging your thread with
modlook– since members of Staff have replied to you, we’ll automatically see your responses and respond accordingly. Thanks!

Thank you.
And to end this, I just have two more questions:
1) How do I know when the import has finished?
and
2) How long will it take for all of the entries to show up on my blog?
Thanks, in advance for this (as well).
-
Once the import has completed, you’ll receive an email notification. The time it takes is dependent on the amount of content, including media, that is being imported. As my colleague noted, it’s best to leave the tab open while importing and let it run overnight.

Since yesterday, I’ve been importing my Livejournal entries to my WordPress account.
I have entries to import from 2011 until present.
But when I checked the number of posts that have shown up on my dashboard, I seen only 106.
Shouldn’t more entries have shown up by now?
Thanks, in advance, for any help that you can provide in regards to this.

Thanks for all of your help in regards to the topic of this thread.
I have another question concerning my journal import. And so, I have started a new thread about it.
Therefore, I will close this thread.
Again, thank you.

Hi there madaboutplaid73
Sometimes the importer can get stuck, the staff is tagged here and they should be able to help if that is the case.
If you have a large number of entries, it was recommended by csonnek to break the import into smaller parts and import it as an XML file. You can read more about it from this thread:
https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/how-long-does-it-take-for-imported-entries-to-show-up-on-your-wordpress-blog/#post-3791196Hope this helped 👍

Thank you for your reply.
Could someone please help me in regards to explaining how I should break the import into smallers parts and import as an XML file to a free WP account?
If so, then thanks in advance.

Hmm, you might be able to use a XML splitter, though I haven’t tried using this with third-party export files.
Perhaps you’re able to export your content from LiveJournal with specific date ranges (e.g. 2011, 2012, etc.)? You would then have multiple XML files, which you could import sequentially.
If you continue to have issues with this, would you be able to share your XML file? You can upload it with https://send.vis.ee/ and then share the transfer link in an email to help@wordpress.com
If you choose to send an email, please share a link to this topic for reference.
-
Just a quick note @madaboutplaid73 — since the questions are still related, please refrain from creating duplicate topics. I’ve gone ahead and merged the two, and you can continue to ask your questions here.
-
Thanks for both your reply about the XML file and for merging the topics, as it’s most appreciated.
I will, as a test, send you the XML file for January 2011 at the e-mail addy you listed above.
Tnen perhaps you will be able to see if it can be imported to my WP account.
