Can I import XML files with a free WordPress account?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have just sent the e-mail to the e-mail addy that you mentioned above.

Hope that the e-mail will be of help to you.

  • Sounds good, thanks for letting me know.

  • Unknown's avatar

    You’re welcome.

And could you please let me know where if anything can be done with the file? And if so, how I go about uploading it to my blog on WP?

If so, then thanks in advance.

  • We can try importing it into a test site to see if it works from our end. Please expect a reply via email.

In the meantime, can you confirm that your LiveJournal blog is still active and set to public?

  • Unknown's avatar

My LiveJournal journal is still active.

But it’s set to Friends Only.

I would rather keep it that way, if it at all possible.

If not, then I can switch it to Public.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ll set my Livejournal journal to public now.

And how long do I have to keep the journal public?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m trying to set all of my Livejournal entries to public but the site seems to tell me that there is an error.

That’s almost 6,000 entries that I would have to change manually, if I can’t find a way to change them all at once.

  • Unknown's avatar

Right, I was able to set all of my LiveJournal posts to Public.

Could you then tell me how long I would have to keep them that way?

If so, then thanks in advance.

  • Hi @madaboutplaid73, the WordPress.com import tool will need access to the site to import properly. Once everything is imported, you can make it private or friends-only again.

The XML file you sent seems to have just 77 entries. Now that the site is public, can you try creating an export again?

  • Unknown's avatar

I just sent an XMl file for the month of January 2011 to see if it would work (as a test in other words).

And when you say to create an export again, do you mean that I should cancel the current one that is running and start a new one?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Just started a new import.

  • Great. I can see that’s running.

It’s still a really large export, so if you run into any trouble with that you’ll want to use a splitter as we mentioned before. But for now I can see it’s still going. You’re at least 1/12th of the way through, so you’ll want to just let it keep running for a few hours.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thank to those of you who helped me with this, as it’s most appreciated.

Also, thank you for the suggestion of using a splitter should I run into any more problems with the import.

    Once again, thank you.

  • You bet. Check in again with us tomorrow if you need more help. Cheers!

The last I checked, the import had imported 2,910 entries.

So that’s about another 3,000 entries to go.

It looks like both all my entries and comments imported from my Livejournal journal to my WordPress blog.

But only my most recent Livejournal journal entry is showing up on my WordPress blog.

When will the rest of the Livejournal entries show up? I mean, how long will it take for them to show up?

Thanks, in advance, for your help.

  • Hi there,

One thing I noticed about your site is that it appears to be using the “Blank Canvas” theme, which if I’m honest is more intended for experienced site owners. The reason for this is because almost nothing about it is “set up” in advance, so it really helps if you have some website experience to draw from.

Or to put it another way, it won’t show blogs until you add that ability, and fully build it out.

Instead, if I can make a recommendation it would be better to start with one of the other themes you see here, as by default they should be able to show your blog posts on the homepage with no setup work: https://wordpress.com/themes/

Do you happen to have any sites (does not have to be WordPress) that you are drawing inspiration from or trying to emulate? If so let us know and we may be able to find a theme that will be a closer fit. Thanks for the additional info!

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve decided to go with this particular theme: ‘Escutcheon’.

And thanks for both your feedback and help in regards to what theme I should use for my WordPress blog.

    It’s most appreciated.

  • Perfect, I can confirm I see your blog posts on the homepage of the site now, yay!

Since you are just getting started, I’d like to recommend (if you have a spare hour) attending our free blogging webinar, which I think will help get you on your feet much faster: https://wordpress.com/webinars/quick-start-blogging/

You may also want to consider our free self-guided course on blogging here as well: https://wpcourses.com/course/intro-to-blogging-on-wordpress-com/

You’re already an active blogger but either of those resources will help show you how to use the WordPress tools in a blogging context.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Thanks for the links, as they are most appreciated.

But I do my journalling on LiveJournal.

I’m only going to use WordPress as a backup.

    Again, thanks for the links.
