You are confusing wordpress.COM hosted blogs and wordpress.ORG installs on paid hosting.
Be aware that there is no FTP access to wordpress.COM hosted blogs like that site linked to your username and no upgrade changes that reality.
You cannot upload any custom themes or third party themes or create your own theme here. You can do that only on wordpress.ORG installs on paid hosting.
The only themes we can use on WordPress.com hosted blogs are licensed and adapted to run on our multiuser software the themes are found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and in your dashboard at > Appearance > Themes
Read: http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/
There is no upgrade you can buy here that changes that.WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Be sure to read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
For a wordpress.ORG software install on paid hosting if you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG account, then click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right-hand corner of the page that opens, https://wordpress.org/support/register.php so you can post to the support forums there.
Resetting your WordPress.ORG password http://codex.wordpress.org/Resetting_Your_Password
WordPress.org support docs are at https://codex.wordpress.org/Main_PageThis guide will explain how to move your WordPress.com site to another hosting platform: Moving to a Self-Hosted WordPress Site

If you wish to remain hosted by wordpress.com then your detailed theme description page with set up instructions is at https://wordpress.com/themes/ryu/ and it the live demo site is here https://ryudemo.wordpress.com/
re: the front page error message found on every new .wordpress.com blog
There is nothing wrong with your blog.
By default, the front page of the blog is the only page that will display all published posts on it. As soon as you publish a post, not a page, the error message will be gone. http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/
For creating a post in the New editor see here http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/#publish-a-new-post
For creating a page in the new editor see here
http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/#create-a-new-pageFor editing in the new editor see:

The support documentation is all found at the Support link http://en.support.wordpress.com which is also on the bottom of your Admin page.
A blog is a website. The difference between blog and website is simply structure and semantics.
A blog is a post based website designed for interactive communication. As the posts are frequently updated and appear on the front page of the site it’s very attractive to search engines.
What most people call a website is merely a page based site that functions as a one-way noticeboard. As the structure is page based and as pages are for static content that rarely changes, and as pages do not have RSS feeds, and as others do not backlink to pages, it is not as attractive to search engines as a post based blog structured site is.
Any WordPress blog can be restructured from being post based to being page based – no upgrade required. For greater clarity read > http://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/

and my post at https://onecoolsite.wordpress.com/2013/07/25/create-a-wordpress-website-step-by-step/re: switching themes
Themes are just “skins” on WordPress.COM hosted blogs. You can quickly and easily change themes on any WordPress.COM hosted blog to another one found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and no data will be lost or negatively affected by the change. The only time you may have to do some work is if you are changing to a dramatically different theme and have done any CSS editing.
Provided you are logged in as Admin under the same username account that registered the blog go to Dashboard > Appearance > Themes, Browse themes until you find one you like and click the “activate” or the “preview” link, or type in the name of the theme you want to use when it appears.
The theme customizer https://en.support.wordpress.com/customizer/ provides a preview function for exactly that purpose ie. so you can view what a theme will appear like prior to changing one.
Note that every theme will have a detailed theme description page with set-up instructions and a live demo site page that you can consult. Here’s an example:

Many bloggers are confused about many things. ;)
The most typical confusion is not knowing the differences between wordpress.com hosted sites and wordpress.org software installs. http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Accepted answer
Update: You can install themes and plugins on WordPress.com sites. You can get FTP and SSH access as well.
Our managed hosting service includes SSL hosting, direct WordPress support, spam protection, backups, maintenance, security, and other services and features that don’t come with the free software. Basically, as a service, we’ll have your back in ways that the free software itself cannot. Extra code like plugins and outside themes can complicate the service we’re offering, so we require the Business Plan for plugin installation.
Or, you are welcome to use your own free copy of WordPress with another host, and use community resources or hired contractors as needed.
