Can I install X Theme on my free WordPress blog?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

I’m having several issues with my blog:

    http://www.bucketinbrazil.wordpress.com

    1. I can’t find the X Theme as an option in Appearance / Themes. I have already purchased it and want to install in on my blog. Why can’t I do this?

    2. How do I go into my front home page so that I can edit it if I want to add code? I can’t find the option anywhere!

Please help me! I am completely lost!

Thank you so much for your time and assistance,

These are the themes available to sites hosted at WordPress.com:

There are differences between WordPress hosted at WordPress.com and WordPress installs at other web hosts and supported at WordPress.org.

    See those differences here:

Thanks so much for that. I did NOT know that. So, I’m purchasing a domain and transferring by blog over to the new domain. I’m guessing once I do, I can install WordPress on the site and use whatever wordpress theme I’d like, right?

Sorry for the newby questions! :/

    Thanks again!

A domain name can be hosted at WordPress.com BUT you are still limited to the WordPress.com themes. To use a different theme, you will need to also choose a web host and pay for that hosting, and often be prepared to be mainly your own support for your site.

I’ve done it both ways and unless you have site needs beyond what WordPress.com offers (and a specific theme might be sufficient to drive you) I would opt for the controlled and supporting environment of WordPress.com. However they do not offer everything – for example if you want ecommerce with a shopping cart, myou will need to go to a webhost. I find wordpress.com allows you to focus on content rather than support issues. Your mileage may vary.

Look closely at all you will need to do before moving. Better yet, keep your site here in case you want to come back and until you are VERY SURE you have made the right move.

What code are you wanting to add to your home page? That might be a deciding factor.

That’s so eye opening! I totally understand the limitations as well as the possibilities now.

I really have my heart set on a theme as it would be ideal for what I want the blog/website to be. Perhaps I’ll look at some themes to see if I can find something similar as it would make much more sense for me to stick to the wordpress.com format.

As you advise, I’m going to have to take a hard look at what I want on the site and make a sound decision. Honestly, I can’t thank you enough! Really appreciate the thorough advice!

So, I found a theme on WordPress.com that might work for me.
    Gateway: https://gatewaydemo.wordpress.com/

I’d like to eventually change the background image to a looping video clip as is showed on the
Ethos 3 theme within the X Theme:
    http://demo.theme.co/ethos-3/

If I wanted to make those additions, I could probably achieve something close to it on the back end of my wordpress.com site, correct?

If so, there’s really no need to pay for hosting and incur the additional costs in going to more advanced route it seems.

Just wondering what your thoughts are? Thanks again, so much!

    Thats beyond my knowledge. :-)

I think posting a new topic and asking specifically about that theme and whether it can do what you want it to do with the video would be appropriate.

That way the topic won’t be old and it really is a new question and deserves new eyes.

There is a post about how to post to the themes part of the forum located here:

    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/how-to-use-the-themes-forum?replies=1

Although WordPress.com encourages members to help one another, you will also see responses from staff and/or theme developers so I hope your new post might catch their attention.
