No, in a wp.COM blog you cannot. You can build an essentially new one if you use Sandbox as your basis.

Can I install a downloaded theme if I am remotely accessing a WP instance on 1and1.com?
A developer put my site up – mercts.com – and I access through wp-admin link.
I would like to know how I can add widgets and custom themes.
Im not super technical and I dont have access to the server –

@tferri, your blog is what is called “self-hosted so you can do about anything you want with it, but for support of self-hosted blogs, you need to head over to http://wordpress.ORG/support/ .
This is the wordpress.COM free hosting service and we have far more restrictions on us, and the software here works differently in key ways.

I know in wp.com we can’t DOWNLOAD a theme, but I would like to change several of them for more interesting ones because they are really boring, I’m sorry if I sound mean, that’s not my intention, but really… it’s time to give us better themes, I have seen so beautiful themes out there with pictures of animals, flowers, images of nature, even cartoons would be nice for a change. If there’s a matter of space then WP could delete the less used or something… or maybe we could vote for the ones we like the most in a poll.

You can certainly do that. You must learn CSS editing, then purchase the CSS upgrade. Then you can do amazing things with it; the limits are only the limits of your CSS coding skill.

Yes, sure… it happens that I don’t understand anything about CSS and I won’t take a course just for editing a theme. I could also get a blog at wordpress.org but I can’t. My idea is that people like me (that are not able to get a wp.org blog and don’t understand CSS) should have the “right” of having better themes. We have a lot of themes but 90% of them are awful. I think most of them should be changed for better ones.

Then you will have to learn to live with the way things are. All you have to do is learn and pay $15 a year. If you’re not willing to do that, then six pages of theme options should be sufficient.

Will you give me the money? Because where I live you have to multiply 15 4 times. What I think I should do is to move my blog to blogspot that has beautiful themes to choose. If the blogspot.com staff can choose nice themes why wordpress.com can’t? I think it’s unffair…
And I won’t “learn to live with the way things are” because I’m a person who likes and cares for things to improve and get better, talking in general, about life or anything that surrounds me. Unlike some people… -
You don’t understand. I don’t know you, I don’t work for WordPress. I don’t care whether you stay or go. It just does not matter to me. It seems obvious that you should make your decisions in accordance with your needs, and if you NEED things to be the way they are somewhere else, then you should go there.

You’ll like the themes at blogspot. All 6 of them. Or is it 8? Then you, too, can have a blog with a double line around the header and a white/dark green/navy background that tells everyone from a hundred paces it’s a freebie on blogspot.

ellaella, friends of mine that have a blog at blogspot.com change their themes all the time, they have losts of them (much more than 6 or 8), they don’t have to pay anything to get them and all of them are beautiful. And I would prefer to have only 6 themes if they were nicer than the 6 PAGES we have here with lots of themes I will never use. Thanks anyway.
