Can I just buy a domain name?

  I am new to WordPress.com and I was wondering if I have the option of only buying the domain name only for a year. Would it be possible for me to do that? or is it a must that I pay the hosting charges?

  The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  There is no hosting charge – hosting is free

  Domain mapping does cost if you want to map a custom domain name to your blog here. That turns your-blog.wordpress.com into your-blog.com – annual fee $ 13.–

  Yes you can just buy a domain name and let it sit and not map it to anything if you want.
