Can I keep my exisiting DNS provider while mapping an existing Domain?

I have a quick question about domain mapping… I’d like to keep my existing DNS provider rather then using wordpress.com’s dns… Is that something that can be done on the main domain rather then a subdomain?

according to viperbond007 on irc it can be done, but I’d like to know how.

viperbond007 on irc has stated to just do it like a sub domain… Does this work? What happens if it doesn’t am I out of the money?

    I started to try it…………
    I had issues:
    1. According to the RFC you can’t use a Cname on the main domain….
    2. Using the IP address for acluhawaii.wordpress.com DOES make the page resolve to something that states “Warning! Domain mapping upgrade for this domain not found. Please log in and go to the Domains Upgrades page of your blog to use this domain.” AND wordpress still gives me the whole “Change your DNS servers” message…

I was affraid that the reason it hadn’t taken was because of the whole “Dns Changes can take up to 3 days to propagate” thing…. SO While acluhawaii.org pointed to 74.200.243.251 and http://www.acluhawaii.org pointed to acluhawaii.wordpress.com I added test.acluhawaii.org to the dns server pointing to acluhawaii.wordpress.com

The system kept telling me I hadn’t pointed test.acluhawaii.org to the right thing…. I waited about 20 minutes, and it finally told me I could add test.acluhawaii.org as a subdomain if I so wished…. Since the http://www.acluhawaii.org, and acluhawaii.org changes happened first the system must have seen all 3 changes… but still refused to let me add acluhawaii.org because I had not changed the name servers…..

Like I originally asked.. Is this possiable? How do I do it?

  • Unfortunately, that’s not exactly possible.

You can map a full domain, but the DNS needs to go through us: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

If you want to control your DNS, try mapping a subdomain like blog.acluhawaii.org: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-subdomain/

As I understand this it can take up to 3 days for DNS changes to fully propagate.. So while we love our current DNS provider the bigger issue for us is that could theoretically mean that for 3 days our email could be screwed up by changing our dns provider from it’s current home to your system…. I know it doesn’t normally take 3 days… but even the 20 minutes we experienced testing the test.acluhawaii.org sub domain would be devastating to our email setup….

Since we can’t us our own DNS is there a way to Pre-load the DNS mail settings so that if we do switch to your DNS servers the email will ALWAYS be pointing to the correct mx record

    IE instead of :
it’s down for 20 minutes (up to 3 days) as we wait for the Change to the DNS servers to take, then another 20 minutes (up to 3 days) as we wait for the re-entered mail settings input into the wordpress custom dns interface to propagate)

    It would become:
Our email never stops working because while the DNS is in limbo all queries are being responded to correctly since when doing a DNS query All dns servers are either reading the OLD MX records from our current setup, or the NEW MX records on wordpress’s servers which are the same because we pre-loaded them….

Just to clarify I know we can put the DNS stuff in AFTER we have followed the Map Existing Domain instructions…. I want to know if it’s possible to do it BEFORE we do that to minimize email down time…..

  • You can’t do it before, but as soon as you map your domain, you can add the MX records via your Custom DNS panel: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/custom-dns/

That way, email will still go to the same place, no matter where your DNS is propagated to (as the MX records will be the same at both locations).
