Can I link one post to a target phrase within another post?

  • Unknown's avatar

I would like to reference some posts text at different points within another post (ie subheadings).

Can I link from sub-headings or a text target within a post?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

Can I link one post to a target phrase within another post?

    Yes.

Can I link from sub-headings or a text target within a post?

Yes. See the Jumping to a Target on Another Page or Post section of the Page Jumps support page.

Thanks for that musicdoc1. I haven’t cracked it yet, but I think I made my first part-successful jump.

Gives me hope that I can get it sorted in the morning.

    Much appreciated.

    You’re welcome, Frank.
If you get stuck on, or have questions about, any part of those instructions, then please add a “modlook” tag to the sidebar of this topic to call for staff attention.

Not sure if I did the modlook thing right – sorry if not.

I have managed to successfully jump between documents.

There seems to be a default jump to the first target tag, when I am actually wanting to tailor jumps.

Is there a further refinement for multiple targets within a single document? I might be missing something simple.

    Thanks,

    Frank

Yes, the “modlook” tag is perfect. Wish I could help you with this. A while back I struggled to learn how to create jump links, and didn’t find the support page very easy to follow. Have forgotten everything I learned about it, because I haven’t used it since. If I can dig up some notes, or examples, in a test site I’ll pass that along here. Hopefully staff will take care of you soon.

Not sure what you mean by multiple targets. I would think that multiple targets would require multiple links.

what I’m doing is posting a collection of poetry, a single poem at a time.

In another, separate post I want to post some explanatory notes.

I want each poem to link to its own target in the explanatory post.

What is happening so far is that when I put in the first target, it links well. If I put in a second target it seem to default to the ‘highest’ one in the explanatory post, rather than going to the place I designate on the page.

If you come up with anything, I’ll be grateful.

The example given in the Page Jumps support page of a target text is

    <p id=”unique-identifier”>I am the target text.</p>

So, if you have two targets in the same post or page they would have different “unique identifiers.” For example, they could be

    1. <p id="unique-identifier-1">I am the target text.</p>
    and
    2. <p id="unique-identifier-2">I am the target text.</p>

Consequently, the separate target URLs would have different “unique identifiers.” For example, they could be

    1. http://myblog.wordpress.com/example/#unique-identifier-1, and
    2. http://myblog.wordpress.com/example/#unique-identifier-2

    Does that help?

Under the Create a Page Jump section of the Page Jumps support page, see the note:

Make sure you have no spaces in your IDs, since that can cause problems in older browsers. Also, be sure to use a unique ID for each target that you create.

musicdoc1, that starts to look a lot like what I might need. Thank you.

I can’t test for a little while now because of work and such, but this looks great.

I’ll let you know when I’ve had a crack at it.

My wife tells me I make things over-complicated.

I’m not sure what she means.

    Thanks again.

    Cheers,

    Frank

    Take your time.
My wife tells me I make things over-complicated
Well, that’s what wives are for…or may the complication is there, and we either see it and attend to it, or ignore it.

  • Hi there,

It looks like you have it sorted out, but let me know if you still need any help.

  • Unknown's avatar

I think this has worked now – thank you so much for your assistance.

I f you care for a look, the trouble (er poetry) is here: https://frankprem.wordpress.com/2016/12/02/a-ha-ha-above-town/

The link to a target is at the bottom of the post.

Again, my thanks and I think this topic can be closed now.

    Cheers,

    Frank

  • Perfect.

I’ll just mention that the identifier can be anything you want it to be. The important thing is that you don’t use the same identifier more than once. So a better option here could be to use your post titles as the identifier, for example, “above-town” for the first one, “taxi-shuttle” for the second, etc. It might be easier that way when you link from a different page, as you won’t need to remember which one you picked as 1, which one is 2, etc.

But as you have it now it works, so you can leave it as is if you prefer.
