Can I make a landing page off of an existing domain?

Is it possible to make a landing page on an already existing domain? Like adding a new page but hiding it from the main flow of the site? Or would I need to buy another domain?
I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

That’s totally possible to do. We have a built in Coming Soon feature which can be activated as per these steps here: https://wordpress.com/support/settings/privacy-settings/#coming-soon and would sit on the domain, whilst you build the site in the background.
