Can I make a widget?

  • Unknown's avatar

    I am moving from an old blog over to WordPress and would like to bring along a few of the items I currently have at my old blog. However, I cannot figure out how to do this. I am assuming that I need to enter them as widgets but I do not know how to make a new one or edit an existing one. For example, “My Library Thing” has an html ‘widget’ that I can use but I don’t know how to transfer it here.

    This format is different than the format I am used to, I like it. But I’m unfamiliar with it. Thank you for any help, and please, be specific. :)

    *chuckle* Please be specific as to what you’re trying to do. :)

    I’m trying to take the html code from Library Thing and put it into my sidebar. When my page loads, it should show a random selection from my library and it will change regularly with each loaded page.

    What do I do with the html code? Where do I enter it? I assume I go to the widget section but what then?

    I was asking for the code. That way we can tell you how to add it to your blog. :)

    You may want to review the other threads on the library thing as the has been discussion in the past. They have a couple different code bits thaqt you can add in. The RSS feed works but the javascript doesn’t since javascripts are stripped due to security concerns.

    Okay – here’s the code.

    <script language=”javascript” type=”text/javascript” src=”http://www.librarything.com/jswidget.php?reporton=LisaW&show=random&header=1&num=7&covers=medium&text=all&onlycovers=1&tag=recommended&css=1&style=4&version=1″>
    </script>

    If it doesn’t work then I guess it doesn’t work. I’d like to add the sitemeter I have been using from my old site too because it is helpful to me to know what referral site people have used so I can get an idea of who is visiting and why.

    Thanks

    I forgot to add – the sitemeter html also has javascript. hhhmmmm

    Is all javascript disabled? That could be a problem for transfering these items over…

    SiteMeter offers HTML for wordpress.com users, but yes, all javascript is disabled.

    wordpressers can use sitemeter, they have a different format to adding the sitemeter widget than using the javascript one.

    as for librarything, you can’t use the widget since it’s javascript and all, but an alternative would be putting the link to your bookshelf in a text widget or in your blogroll.

    Library Thing’s now doing an RSS feed as well that you should be able to drop into an RSS widget.
