Can I make categories visible only from a certain page?
-
Is there a way to make a category that only shows up when visitors access a certain page?
What I want to is establish a page called something like “My Dark Secrets;” and have the category “Dark Secrets” and the posts “Dark Secret #1,” “Dark Secret #2,” etc. visible only to visitors to that page. Can this be done?
(Would I be better off making Dark Secrets #1, #2, etc. pages instead of posts? What problems might I make for myself by doing that?)
I’d appreciate any help or insight. Thanks.

You are not able to force a particular category to display only from a particular page. You do have built-in category archives, however. You can add the Categories Widget to your sidebar in order to display the links. But again, these are built in templates with default URLs.

You could make a page with links to those specific categories. Then when someone clicked on the link, they would be taken to that particular category page.

Okay, I think I got this all wrong. I realize that this may represent a new height/depth in the density of (human brain) matter), but –
I created a Page to be my portal/”Danger, Will Robinson!”/disclaimer Page (the Ravell’d Sleeve of Care), created a Category with a similar name, and published the posts I wanted to segregate in that Category.
Oops! Any time a Category has at least one Post in it, it shows up in the Category list on the home page. So a visitor to the home page could click directly through to the Category listing without having been properly warned and disclaimed.
(Teck-Line, I looked at your page, but I don’t see how you got your Categories list *not* to display on your Homepage.)
So I took TSP’s advice and went to go make the Disclaimer Page the Parent Page of the to-be-segregated Posts.
Oops. Posts can’t have Parent Pages.
So I copy/paste to convert the Posts into Pages (An Old, Old Whine and Not a “Good” Day… ), and make the Disclaimer Page the Parent Page of the to-be-segregated Pages.
And Oops! Again: there they are on the Home Page: Angry Raisins, my two Subpages neatly listed under the Parent Page in my Pages List. So, a visitor to the home page could click directly through to the Subpages, bypassing the disclaimer page.
Trawling through the “Questions” forum looking for this thread, I run across a question from someone who *wants* her subpages to show up on his homepage and isn’t getting them https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/page-parents-hierarchy-of-pages?replies=5. One response says she needs to install her “Pages” widget to make the subpages show up on the Homepage.
So, quick-like-a-bunny, I’m off to uninstall my “Pages” widget.
Oops. I am “using 0 widgets in the sidebar” – I can’t uninstall a widget I’ve never installed. (FWIW, this is all taking place in the “Kubrick” template.)
(And, just parenthetically, if “Pages,” “Archives,” and “Categories” show up whether their widgets are installed or not, why are there widgets for them at all?)
Is there really no way to direct all traffic to certain pages through a portal/disclaimer page? I can’t be the only person on WordPress.com who’s ever wanted to do this, can I?
*headdesk* *headdesk* *headdesk* *headdesk* *headdesk*
[The pages I want to disclaim aren’t really terrible secrets or anything. I want to blog about some chronic health problems I have, and think it’s only fair to give readers fair warning before they venture into material that is even more (considerably more, if that can be believed) whiney and bothersome than this post. :) ]
Thank you.

Hahahaha! The way you whine is, I think, funny. Sorry that I laughed. Heheheh…
-about widgets-
Categories, meta, blogroll, and pages widgets appear because you don’t use any widgets. But once you ‘install’ one, like for instance, tag cloud widget, all those default widgets will be off your site. I doubt you don’t know about this.
-about hiding a certain category-
You can use text widget and write down only the categories links you want to appear.
-about hiding posts of a certain category, or hiding certain widgets from certain posts/pages-
You need css upgrade.
-
And about your third oops, you can EXCLUDE the sub-pages from showing in your sidebar: there’s an option for that in the pages widget.
-
Yell, I’m very glad that you find the way I whine funny enough to make you laugh. :)
I try to find the humor even in difficult things because, once I’ve laughed at something, I know I’ll be able to stand it.And if I can amuse someone else by showing them what I think is funny, then we both get to laugh. :)
And – SUCCESS! :) :) :)
I was able to get the “Pages” widget to show up and be editable by installing a different, new widget. :)
And so then I was able to exclude the pages I don’t want showing up on the sidebar. Thanks very much to you and Panagh for all your help. :)

(Teck-Line, I looked at your page, but I don’t see how you got your Categories list *not* to display on your Homepage.)<blockquote/>
The reason you don’t see the Categories on the home page is because I created an
page and linked to the posts posted under that category you can achieve the same
thing by making a sticky post then insert wording (Category Name) & link it to the
default category link that wordpress.com provides.Example of a category link

Note you have to link to a category you have you use in a
blog post for it to work.Live Example

(this may not be the right place for this, but I’m not sure where the right place would be)
Yellaojrak –
I went to check out your blog, and at “philosofreak.wordpress.com,” all I get is:
“Not Found
Sorry, but you are looking for something that isn’t here”You can’t be a member and not have a blog, can you?
And even if you could, you don’t really seem to me like a not-having-a-blog type of guy?Is something going wrong here?
-
Oh, that. Philosofreak is a new blog, created only ten or so hours ago and I still don’t know what to do about it. My real blog is http://ojrak.wordpress.com
-
I’m sorry for getting you lost. I edited my profile, set the new blog as my ‘official’ site, just because I didn’t have anything better to do. I’ll re-edit it.
-
Thanks, Ojrak.
And thanks again to all who’ve been so helpful on this Question. I’ve got the widget edited and the links manually added to the portal-Page, and it’s all working just like I wanted it to. :) :) :)
