Can I make images appear larger on the page by default?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Our site is khsknighttimes.com

It is a customized Enterprise Theme for our high school newspaper.

We include a main photo with every post, and if you look at the page you will notice we use the same image alignment and size for the main photo in every post.

As it is, the relatively small size of these main images make the site appear more “text-heavy” than I would like. I would love for these images to be larger by default. Is there a setting I can adjust?

I am not proficient with CSS, but if I need to tinker with it I’m willing to try. Can anyone give me step-by-step instructions for making these main photos appear larger? I’m not sure what size they are now, but perhaps increase them by about a third?

    Thanks!

I’ll flag this to be moved to the CSS forum.

Is this a CSS issue? I was just asking if it was in my post. I don’t know if it is or not.

No, it’s not a CSS issue, yes, there’s a setting you can adjust. You insert these images selecting the “medium” size option. The default widths for the thumbnail, medium and large options are controlled in Settings > Media.

CSS issue is there’s no point using the tools of the Visual editor or code in the Text editor to style your headings when you have the upgrade. If you want a small red heading and a larger underlined heading at the beginning of each post, you can style them once for all in the CSS editor.

Other issue: why don’t your posts have titles?

Thanks justpi. I’m glad it’s not a CSS thing or I’d be lost.

When I go to Media Settings, I see this:

    Image sizes
The sizes listed below determine the maximum dimensions in pixels to use when adding an image to the Media Library.

    Thumbnail size … Width 150 Height 150

Medium size … Max Width 300 Max Height 300

Large size … Max Width 1024 Max Height 1024

The numbers are adjustable, but there is no option to “choose” one over the other. Could I change the “Medium size” max width and height to a larger number? I want to ask before I try it and break something.

Regarding the small red heading and the large underlined heading we use on every post, I do those manually when I enter the students’ stories. I just copy and paste the code from the Text editor of a previous post. It’s not to big of a hassle, really. But if it would be easy (stress “easy,” dummy-proof) to tell the theme to insert this header into every new post, that would definitely save me some time.

I appreciate you helping me out.

That Enterprise theme has been retired as it no longer supports all WordPress.com features. http://theme.wordpress.com/retired/enterprise/ I’m wondering if that could be a factor here.

Hmmm. Thanks timethief. You guys are very helpful.

Is there a new Enterprise theme? We have a pretty simple site, really. Not a lot of bells and whistles. I haven’t noticed anything missing. One exception is that the Facebook and Twitter widgets stopped showing up on my home Firefox browser, although I can see them on Chrome when I’m at work. (Can you see them in the the sidebars? The page doesn’t look as good without them.)

But I guess that’s another matter. I better tackle one thing at a time. :)

Good news: I just changed the Medium Size max width and height from 300 to 400 and all the main photos got larger. It’s about the size I wanted them. I just wanted the art to be a little more prominent.

    So thank you both!

Maybe I’ll look into a new theme for next school year. I’m a little worried about switching in January, because if things get too out of whack I won’t have time to fix them before we release a new issue.

    You’re welcome.

“Could I change the “Medium size” max width and height to a larger number?”
Yes you can, that’s what I suggested in my previous reply, you did it, and you got the result you were looking for.

Whether the theme is retired or not is as irrelevant as can be: it’s just another way for timethief to pop up although she has nothing useful to say.

My post was sincere and I have had it with your repeated childish behavior of taking arrogant cheap shots at me. I have a list of them and from one out every time you breach the forum code of conduct polic I will report you like I’m doing now.

    Oh I’m so scared…

As I know people will treat us only the way we allow them to be treat us, and as I have reached the end of my patience with you and your personal attacks I’m taking my stand here. You have a choice of not personally attacking me and helping others with their issues uninterrupted on these support forums or keeping up the personal attacks, thereby breaching the forum code of conduct and being reported and being subject to a two day suspension every time your overinflated ego compels you to breach it.
