Can I make pretty links using a free wordpress account or a paid wordpress account ?

You can’t change the permalink structure on WordPress.com sites. If you want to customize the permalinks you have to self-host your site using the software from WordPress.org.

I have my own domain. Does that mean I self host the site already and can customise the permalink ?

  • Unknown's avatar

The domain can either be mapped from wordpress.com site, or self hosted somewhere else.

To learn about the difference between wordpress.COM (wordpress as service) and wordpress.ORG (wordpress as software), please check : https://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Your url http://actiontoyoursuccess.com/ return error, did you purchase the domain from wordpress.com or somewhere else?

  • Unknown's avatar

WordPressdotcom sites already use the “pretty permalink” structure.

According to the WhoIs information for actiontoyoursuccess.com , the domain was purchased someplace else, but the nameservers are currently pointing to WordPressdotcom.

Using your custom domain on a WordPressdotcom website requires the annually renewing, paid domain mapping upgrade. More about setting up domain mapping here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

Let us know if you have more questions about that.

Thanks a lot for your guys’ reply.

I have a free wordpress domain, which is http://www.actiontoyoursuccess.wordpress.com

    I have my domain http://www.actiontoyoursuccess.com
    registered at hostgator.

Several questions and really need your help :

    1) If I want to use wordpress to make the pretty links, then I subscribe the premium plan, correct ?

    Premium $99 per year
    Package : A WordPress.com Site
    13GB Storage Space
    Custom Site Address
    No Ads
    Custom Design
    Video Hosting & Storage
    Direct Email Support

    2) the wordpress premium plan includes mapping fee, correct ?

    3) the wordpress premium plan includes hosting service already, correct ?

  • Unknown's avatar

    1) If I want to use wordpress to make the pretty links, then I subscribe the premium plan, correct ?

If by pretty links you mean ‘http://www.actiontoyoursuccess.com/’, yes you can map the domain from http://www.actiontoyoursuccess.wordpress.com to point to http://www.actiontoyoursuccess.com/

    2) the wordpress premium plan includes mapping fee, correct ?

Yes, wordpress.com will give you 1 free credit, which you can use to buy domain or in this case, map the domain from hostgator.

    3) the wordpress premium plan includes hosting service already, correct ?

Even the free plan includes hosting, but only 3gb storage space. But there will be ads showing on your blog and there is no video hosting.

So the clear it up, you’re basically still using http://www.actiontoyoursuccess.wordpress.com to manage your blog. It’s just that visitors can type the address ‘http://www.actiontoyoursuccess.com’ to access your site.

sorry for my poorly worded explanation.

I mean pretty link lite, that wordpress plugin as I am making some landing pages using leadpages.net and have to publish them on wordpress and then change the url of the landing pages using wordpress pretty link lite.

Then what I should do is

step 1 : go premium plan with the mapping of my own domain (www.actiontoyoursuccess.com)

step 2 : login in to either http://www.actiontoyoursuccess.wordpress.com or http://www.actiontoyoursuccess.com for the admin, correct ?

step 3 : download the pretty link lite plugin, correct ?

  • Unknown's avatar

Ah, so ‘pretty link lite’ is a plugin. Plugins and themes are not allowed to be installed on wordpress.com site.

If you want to install plugins, you need to download wordpress software from wordpress.org and install on your own/hostgator server. Some hosting provider has tool for easy install.

I’d suggest you read this page before moving on and purchase premium plan:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

I explain what I need more clearly.

I am making some landing pages using leadpages.net and I have to publish them on wordpress and then change the url of the landing pages using a wordpress plugin named pretty link lite or pro, not quite remember which is correct.

I need my own domain instead of a free wordpress domain as I cannot use the pretty link plugin with a free wordpress domain.

Hope I explain the above clearly.

    Then my questions are

    1) I need a hosting service, correct ?

    2) I need to register a domain of my own, which I did at hostgator, i.e. actiontoyoursuccess.com

    3) I have a free wordpress domain , which is http://www.actiontoyoursuccess.wordpress.com
already and I need to map it to actiontoyoursuccess.com.

    4) I need to login to the admin of http://www.actiontoyoursuccess.com to add the wordpress plugin of pretty link lite or pro

    5) I see there is a package at hostgator homepage for wordpress hosting package with the following things

    Unlimited Domains
    One Click Installs
    Unmetered Bandwidth
    Shared SSL Certificate

But In wordpress homepage, there is a package including the following things

    Premium $99 per year
    Package : A WordPress.com Site
    13GB Storage Space
    Custom Site Address
    No Ads
    Custom Design
    Video Hosting & Storage
    Direct Email Support

    6) Do I need to subscibe to both hostgator hosting package and wordpress package to meet my needs stated above ?

    Really thanks to your help

  • Unknown's avatar

    1) I need a hosting service, correct ?

Yes, you need a hosting, but wordpress.com doesn’t not provide hosting which you can ftp or edit the file in the server. In this case, hostgator hosting would suit your need.

    2) I need to register a domain of my own, which I did at hostgator, i.e. actiontoyoursuccess.com

    Correct.

    3) I have a free wordpress domain , which is http://www.actiontoyoursuccess.wordpress.com
already and I need to map it to actiontoyoursuccess.com.

You need to install wordpress software into the server hosted in hostgator (providing you’ve purchased one). If you’ve installed the wordpress software in your server, you don’t need to map the domain anymore. Hostgator support will provide assistance.

    4) I need to login to the admin of http://www.actiontoyoursuccess.com to add the wordpress plugin of pretty link lite or pro

Yes, but not from wordpress.com (here). The wordpress you install on your server and the account created has no connection with the wordpress.com blog at http://www.actiontoyoursuccess.wordpress.com/

Like I said before, you can only install plugin on self hosted wordpress, which is the wordpress you install on hostgator server. Your blog http://www.actiontoyoursuccess.wordpress.com/ is hosted by wordpress.COM and therefore you can’t install theme or plugin.

    6) Do I need to subscibe to both hostgator hosting package and wordpress package to meet my needs stated above ?

    No, I don’t encourage so.

Okay, let’s put it this way. Consider wordpress like a land.

wordpress.com (the site you’re on now), provide the house, you just need to populate the house with already filled furniture. However, whoever stay in this land must follow some rules and restrictions.

wordpress.org is the tool to build the house. So you need to rent a land (hostgator server), once you rent the land, you can build the house by using the wordpress software (or in this case ‘One Click Installs’ from hostgator). You can even fill it with whatever furniture you like (plugins & themes). That’s complete freedom. However, you’re solely responsible for the house, from safety and updates.

I am making some landing pages using leadpages.net and I have to publish them on wordpress and then change the url of the landing pages using a wordpress plugin named pretty link lite or pro, not quite remember which is correct.

In this case, the wordpress offered by hostgator would be more suitable for you.

Many thanks Elte for your invaluable time and your help solves my problem !!!

Is there any place that I can give you a big thumb up as a compliment ?

Do you get any pay answering questions as I consume much of your time ?

Just one more question out of curiosity, if I can build a wordpress website for “free” at hostgator (paying the hosting fee) using the one click installs,

then how’s different from building a wordpress website at http://www.wordpress.com ?

    Many thanks again !!!

  • Unknown's avatar

    You’re welcome Fido.

I’m not getting paid, but it’s fun to help people. I’m answering on my free time so it’s fine.

Just one more question out of curiosity, if I can build a wordpress website for “free” at hostgator (paying the hosting fee) using the one click installs,

then how’s different from building a wordpress website at https://wordpress.com ?

building wordpress site at wordpress.com require less technical knowledge. Some people just want to get started blogging without worrying about codes and such. Create account, choose theme, done—you basically created a wordpress site. Besides, all the technical bits have been handled by wordpress.com engineers and staff, so the software is always updated. You don’t have to worry about being hack or your website crash/down due to server hardware failure.

However, there are drawbacks. Millions of people are using wordpress.com, installing custom plugins and themes are not allowed, since slight error would affect entire blogs. There are also other things like monetization or customization which is not allowed.

WordPress is an open source software, so it can be installed on hostgator for free. This allow you to do whatever you want. Search for themes on google and you’ll get massive results, you can even buy premium themes and get it installed on your site. The plugin ‘pretty links’ can be installed too, and you can even put ads or monetize your blog. Since you’re allowed to install any plugins, there are no guarantee that all plugins will work well, especially when you have several plugins installed and run together. You are responsible for your own action shall your site return error or something wrong happen.

It’s like buying mac and custom built pc.
In mac, you choose the model and you’re done—just like wordpress.com
If you want to choose certain motherboard brand, certain graphic card, windows version or linux, etc then wordpress.org (hostgator) is for you.

@fidoleung Or as Matt Mullenweg (co-founder of the WP project and founder of Automattic, WPcom’s parent company) likes to say, it’s the difference between owning your own home and renting one. More details explained in the Support doc that elte referred you to earlier https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

And just so you both know, there are no www’s in any WordPressdotcom address. :)

    Cheers and best wishes.

Thanks for simpler analogy and the www explanation Jennifer.
