Can I map and then transfer a domain once ready

  We already have a website, but we want to update it. The problem- the person in charge is not longer with us. We are learning to create a website from scratch but we already have the domain name.

  More details would help. What is the address of your site and is it hosted here at WordPress.com? If not, do you want to move your domain to WordPress.com? You can start off with a free site here and upgrade to a paid plan to enable you to map/transfer your existing domain when you’re ready.
