Can I move from .com to .org changing individual permalinks?
-
Is it possible to change from .com to .org, changing all the permalinks individually? I especially want to leave out the dates, but for several posts also wish to change the entire permalink.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

No. If you chnage permalink structure on the self hosted WordPress.ORG site then all the links will be broken. See: http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/
-
Ok, thanks. Do you know if it is possible to move the whole site to a new domain on wordpress.org and then, once that is done, to individually change the permalinks one by one (I do realize that is an incredible amount of work) in such a way that I don’t lose any ranking? (It sounds a bit roundabout and complicated to me, but you never know, right?)

If you create some redirect rules in your new self-hosted site’s .htaccess file, you’ll avoid broken links, and the old link structure will simply redirect to the new one. You can also create specific redirects for the posts where you’re changing the slug, in addition to removing the date portion.
If you need help with the specific format for those redirect rules, feel free to post in the WordPress.org forums:
You’ll need a free WordPress.org account to post – if you don’t already have one, you can register here:
https://wordpress.org/support/register.php
Be sure to give specific examples of an old URL and a new one so folks can help you more easily.
Here is a tutorial to get you started:
http://www.woothemes.com/2013/11/htaccess-url-redirects/
There are also some plugins that let you do this without touching your .htaccess file manually.
Good luck!

@kathrynwp
Thanks for the rescue here. I avoid giving wordpress.ORG solutions here on this support forum. -

You’re very welcome!
I should clarify that the .htaccess redirects will only work if your site on WordPress.com had a custom domain, and you’ll be using the same domain on your self-hosted site.

Oops, now you guys got me all confused. Timethief says I will lose my ranking. Kathrynwp kind of makes it sound as if I won’t if I follow her instructions (but maybe that’s just my interpretation), supposing I have a custom domain. Which I don’t, so I guess it’s all academic, but I’m interested to know just the same.

Get a domain first and map to it from your wordpress.com blog. Then do as kathrynwp states (she is Staff).
In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from, and the domain name you desire must be available for purchase, or you must already own the domain URL.
You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard at > Store > My Upgrades to purchase upgrades for the blog.
See here if you do not own a domain http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
See here for mapping an existing domain that you already own http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
if you already have a website you don’t want to affect, and you want to add a blog to it under a subdomain (for example, blog.yourgroovydomain.com) see here http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-subdomain/After you do the primary blog set up it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

If you get working redirects set up on your new self-hosted site, you should be good to go – but you can only do redirects on the same domain. For example, it’s not possible to redirect mygroovysite.wordpress.com/2014/12/my-awesome-post/ to mygroovysite.com/my-awesome-post, for example.
We do have a site redirect upgrade available at WordPress.com, but that only works well if you keep your permalink structure the same:
Please note: In order for the Site Redirect to work correctly, the permalinks on the new site (the one you’re redirecting to) should match those at WordPress.com. WordPress.com uses the following permalink structure:
-
Ok, thanks. So before I do anything I should really ask the .org forum what the possibilities are once I have mapped to the new .com domain, right?
-
Timethief and I have outlined most of the possibilities for you above, so if you have any questions about them, feel free to ask here.
Posting in the .org forum could be useful if you specific need help with the redirect structure for your .htaccess file, if you decide to get a custom domain before you switch over to a self-hosted site.
