Can I move my image library?
-
I want to move the media library from .com (/garydayellison) to .org (http://www.day-ellison.com/wordpress). Is this possible?
Thank you,
Gary Day-Ellison

During the import process to move your content to the new site, you are given the opportunity to have the wordpress software import all your media as well.

Thank you. I only want to import the images to avoid duplication. Is that an option too?

You will have to open each image in a browser window and then drag them off and into a folder on your desktop and them upload them to the media library on your new site. There is no way to export images only.

Already imported everything else. The blog part came in with v. lo-res images. So I ditched that and imported from Posterous (former blog) That’s perfect. But the images on the rest (portfolio/information/archive) link back to com.

This is going to be a lot of work no matter what since after you get them onto your computer and uploaded to the new site, you are going to have to go into each post, delete the old image and the reinsert the new image so it is linked to the one on your new site.

Blimey! 291 images 50mb. Grim prospect.
Maybe I should start a new blog. import everything. Delete all the pages and posts and that would leave me with just the library?
-
You don’t think some nice person at WordPress would just release me a copy of the folder with my media in it from their server? I’d take it from there with the links.
-
The thing is, if you have the importer grab the images when it is importing your content, it will even correct all the URLs to the images in your posts and pages so they point to the images in the uploads folders on your new site.

If you end up reimporting, don’t delete the old images on the .COM site until you are absolutely sure it has brought over everything. I’ve had some instances where unattached images and other file times were not imported. You may still have some manual downloading and uploading to do.

You might give it a try. When you click import after locating the file, the next screen should as if you want to import your media. You select yes and it should grab all of it. Just make sure the site is set to public, and not private. I don’t think it will grab from a private site.

You just nailed my mistake. .com was set to private. I had to change that so the .org would link to the images. Wonder how many others make this mistake? They should be warned!
