Yes you can sell any products you personally make or services you personally provide however free hosted WordPress.COM blogs cannot be set up for ecommerce transactions. There is no FTP access and we cannot install plugins and there is no upgrade that changes that.
You can use a PayPal donation button http://en.support.wordpress.com/paypal/ and set up a contact form http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact-form/ on a page http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/
If you have a shopping cart set up somewhere else on the internet you can create a custom menu http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/ and then include a custom link to it. http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-custom-links
If you need a site that’s equipped for ecommerce then you can hire a web host and set up a WordPress.ORG install. Learn about the differences here. http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

I’ve been doing it for something like seven years on mine. Paypal works well, provided your registrants tell you which workshop they are registering for. Otherwise you have to set the prices to be different from one another so you can keep track of who registered for what.

Thanks for your help. So if I want to offer workshops, and I instruct/link people to email me, and then send them sign-up info and links to paypal through our emails … is that an acceptable way?
