Can I own multiple WordPress domains?

Is it possible to have a (name of blog).com and (same name of blog).org domains on wordpress? I want to have two different versions of the same blog, one .com and one .org. Thanks.
    Blog url: http://unboxedlife.wordpress.com/

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Deliberate duplication of content across domains is not a recommended practice and it sure isn’t wise. Google’s Panda algorithm detects duplicate content. WordPress.com does not support creation of duplicate content blogs. Read this please > http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=66359

I wasn’t clear with what I meant. The two sites would have distinct content. For example the .com site would be my regular blog that I write now while the .org version would be the home of a non-profit that is created as a side project of my original blog. So they would not be duplicate sites, just two distinct sites tied together with a similar URL. Does that make sense?

Yes! Thank goodness. Yes you can purchase as many domain mapping upgrades as you wish and map to an existing domain http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

Yes, sorry for the confusion. So I would just upgrade my existing .wordpress.com blog to a .com domain and then purchase another .org domain right? So they wouldn’t litteraly be connected except through their similar url? Is this the only way you know to do this? Thanks so much for your help.

I will add that the spin off site does not exist yet. I don’t think mapping is what I am looking for. I am wanting to own two seperate but related websites hosted through wordpress with similar domains, one .com and one .org. Is that possible?

Create the spinoff site. Then, from its dashboard, buy the upgraded custom domain you want to use on that blog. On the other blog, go to its dashboard to buy the domain to apply to that one. Easy, but you do have to be careful to buy the right upgrade from the right dashboard.

You start with two different WordPress.COM blogs – then you buy and map two different domain names to your two base WordPress.COM blogs – good idea to buy the domains at the same time to keep others from getting the version you want

So I would need to register another, different, email and user name and create a brand new blog for my second one, right? So they would essentially be two seperate blogs under two seperate email adresses? Then I can purchase the domain upgrades for both. Is there a way to have the two seperate blogs under the same user name for ease of use? If I am understanding the way you are describing this I would then have two wordpress.com user names, right? Thank you for your help.

You can have more than one blog on the same account and email – no need to have two different names or accounts at all –

Yes an account can purchase upgrades for more than one blog as long as you are Admin on the blogs

Ok cool, so I create a new blog and purchase the upgrade domain for it to .org. Then I would have unboxedlife.com and unboxedlife.org which are two distinct and seperate sites with distinct content but with similar urls. I think that makes sense to me. Are there any issues with having two blogs on the same user name I should be aware of that you know?

  • Unknown's avatar

Just that people know that it is you on both blogs – but sounds like that is not an issue (sometimes people do anonymous blogs that they don’t want friends and coworkers to know about and for that you need two names and two accounts)

  • Unknown's avatar

Nope, that is not a problem. I will probably be referencing them on content sometimes in either place. I really appreciate your help, everyone, on this. I always find such great help here. If I have more questions I will be back. Thanks again.
