No you cannot, we aren’t allowed to put advertising on our blog. WordPress puts ads there from time to time to logged out users, and if you want to get money for ads, you can sign up for Wordads if you pay for a custom domain ($18 a year), but you’ll need a lot of traffic to make a small profit.

Is there any way then we can try to monetize our free wordpress.com blog, except for using affiliates?

In short: Affiliates are banned. Pay per post is banned. Paid ads are banned.
WP.com itself puts ads on your blog (you won’t see them when signed in) to pay for your hosting. They don’t let you compete with that.
Your options are: buy the No Ads upgrade and do without ads altogether; leave things as they are and not place ads or use affiliates or MLM; get paid hosting for 10-15 dollars a month and place your own ads, which will not pay for the cost of hosting unless you get at least a thousand hits a day.
