I am unable to find out how ( or whether) I can post ebooks on my blog in .mobi format for free downloads by readers. I want to post ebooks that I have written and that I own all rights to, as well as ebooks based on out-of-copyright public domain source materials that I have edited and formatted for easy navigation.
I much prefer the.mobi format because it is supported by multiple platforms.

Hello there, Unfortunately, you cannot upload .mobi files to your WordPress.com-hosted site.
There are a several solutions available to you however.
1. You can store your .mobi files on an outside server and link to them from your WordPress.com site.
2. You can transfer your .mobi files to one of WordPress.com’s accepted file types and upload them:
3. You can use Scribd to embed your documents into your WordPress.com site:

4. You can transfer from a WordPress.com-hosted site, to a self-hosted version via WordPress.org. Here are the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org:
On a self-hosted site, you have more flexibility and can upload any files types you desire.
If I can help you further with any of these options, please let me know! All the best to you.

Hi thatrobyn – I appreciate your effort in explaining these options. What I was hoping for ( and it looks like I can’t find) is a widget that a reader could click to download a file from my blogsite. The work-around I am considering is to put up a post that says “If you’ll comment on this post it will give me your email address and then I’ll email you the free book.” Unless you or another helpful soul has a different suggestion. Thanks again!

Howdy!
In lieu of the instant .mobi download widget, the Post is a good idea, but Posts are dynamic. The more Posts you publish, the further down the list it will fall chronologically, and the fewer people will see it as time passes.
The solution is to embed a contact form on a Page, which can be permanent on your site.
Here’s info about creating a contact form:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact-form/There’s a lot of flexibility in what information you can gather from your readers.
Readers can choose certain book titles, leave you comments, their email addresses, etc. The data entered in the contact form will be sent directly to your email, so you have nearly-instant notification of a request for your book(s).I hope this suits your needs. Please drop another note if you have questions. Best of luck!

Hi thatrobyn – you are a very creative thinker! Thank you for this suggestion. I will take your excellent advice and create a contact form which I will then embed on a separate page in my blog. Then I will be able to direct people who interested in receiving a free copy of my book in .mobi format to that page, where they can leave their request and preferred email address.
Very nice work-around – thanks again.

Bill — You are so very welcome. I am glad that works well for you!
I wish you ALL the best of luck. Soon enough, I’ll teach people how to link to you on the best sellers list :)

Hi thatrobyn – so I just created a new page titled “Request A Free Book” and created a default contact form on that page, along with a post that tells readers what to do to request the book. I’ll just leave that page alone – not posting anything else so that this first post remains at the top – and will notify folks in my various networks such as LinkedIn that the free copy is available. Thanks again for your great suggestion and very quick response to my request for help.
