Can I post youtube and other links?

Is it legal (copyright related) to publish (and clearly sign that you are not an owner) embeded youtube videos or external links?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there. As far as I know embedding a youtube video does not infringe copyright, as by uploading a video to youtube and enabling sharing the uploader gave implicit permission for you to do this. As long as you don’t download the video and then upload it directly to your blog (as opposed to merely embedding it), you should be fine. (Note, this is an opinion and not legal advice.)

If the youtube video itself infringes on someone’s copyright it might be an issue, but then it’s the person who uploaded it who broke the law and the copyright owner should contact youtube to have it taken down. I suggest you consult Youtube’s policy on this for more information.

Posting links to other sites is a hotly-debated topic, but general consensus in the absence of clear legislation is that it’s not illegal, provided you don’t link to something illegal, e.g. pirated downloads. See here for more information on linking and copyright: http://www.templetons.com/brad/linkright.html

What I’m pretty sure of is that WordPress.com wouldn’t have allowed us to do either if it was illegal at face value, as their own policies regarding copyright are quite strict. https://en.support.wordpress.com/fair-use/
