Can I purchase a domain name but remain on a free wordpress.com plan?
-
Hi, I have just created a basic website using the free plan (<3gb, etc) on .wordpress.com. Can I purchase a domain name for 12 months (of the style .co.uk and thus not be a .compress.com subdomain) but remain on the free plan? And renew the domain name annually thereafter but remain on the free plan rather than upgrading to a paid plan? (Sorry for the dumb question – I did look at the Upgrade option but I wasn’t sure if I could stay on the free plan). Thanks for your time.

Not really. The free address would continue to display. https://wordpress.com/support/domains/register-domain/ says
Every site comes with a free address with .wordpress.com in the URL. You can add a custom domain name, but can only set it as the primary site address if you have purchased a WordPress.com plan.
Note that a custom domain is included free for the first year with a paid plan.
