Can I purchase a domain without a plan?
-
Hi! I want to buy a domain for my blog. Is it possible to just buy the domain and not the plan? I did that two or so years ago for another website, and when I looked into it now it seems that I must purchase a plan as well. Help please? Thank you!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hey mistybrookmeadows,
Yes, you have to upgrade it. Free plan doesn’t allow you to use a custom domain.

Hi there!
With WordPress.com you need an Upgraded plan in order to use a custom domain with your site (for more info about every single plan you can have a look here). You can either choose between the 250 top level domains offered by WordPress.com, including the main extensions that are .com, .org, .me, and .live or for instance connect a domain you already own to your WordPress.com site, but you will need a paid upgrade, anyway.
Another option is to create a site using WordPress.org (but still you will have to purchase a domain from a register). To make things a little bit clearer:
WordPress comes in two flavors: WordPress.com and WordPress.org.
With WordPress.org, you use the self-hosted, open source version of the WordPress software, it means you host your own blog. It also means you can freely upload and install themes and plugins, edit the code behind your site, have access to your site’s database, etc. But it also means more responsibility (you have to take care of backups, upgrade the software version, security, etc.).
With WordPress.com instead, you don’t have to download software, pay for hosting, or manage a web server. WordPress.com takes care of all of the hostings, security, backup. etc. You have some limitations with a free plan (you can’t upload any custom themes, plugins or modify the code behind your blog), but some of those options are available with an Upgraded Plan.
