Can I purchase a theme and use it on another WP site?

    Hi,
    I am logged in to wordpress with my free account and want to purchase a theme called Adventure (£52). It is visible on my free account and I can buy it easy enough. However my actual website is hosted with WordPress Extenstions added and when I try to find the theme via my domain host, it does not show. Can I purchase the theme through my free account, download the theme and then import it into my hosted account. I didn’t want to go ahead without checking as it could be that I end up paying twice to use it for my domain hosted site only. Hope this makes sense, Thank you.

    Note: Premium Themes that are set up for WordPress.com use only cannot be transferred to self-hosted WordPress.org sites. Some Automattic-developed Premium themes can be transferred to a self-hosted site at no charge, as part of a Guided Transfer. Please post in the Premium theme forums if you’d like to know whether your theme qualifies.

    Hi @way2goadventures,
    If the theme is not available on the WordPress.ORG but it is available on WordPress.COM you cannot directly download the theme and import it to your self-hosted WordPress.ORG site.

    You have to first contact the developer of the theme and ask their permission. Many developers of WordPress.COM themes are happy for people to use their themes on self-hosted WordPress blogs.

    You can find the name of the developer at the bottom of the sidebar of the theme page. Or you can just view the style.css file of the theme to get developer info. You can find the style.css file of a theme by browsing the wordpress theme repository here: https://wpcom-themes.svn.automattic.com/

    NOTE: If a theme is under GPL License then the permission to download and use is already given if not then it is mandatory to take the permission of the author before downloading and using it outside WordPress.COM.

    You cannot use premium themes outside WordPress.COM. My answer was only for free themes.
